11. Microbiological food safety of cheese produced in Swedish small-scale dairies : characteristics, growth and enterotoxin production of Staphylococcus aureus
Sammanfattning : The number of small-scale dairies in Sweden has increased during the past decade. Current agricultural policy encourages such small-scale production and various ways to help producers have been proposed. Combining traditional cheese making and good product safety is a challenge, since several human pathogens pose a hazard in the products. LÄS MER
12. Stress induced virulence of Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes
Sammanfattning : Control of the dissemination of pathogens in the food production chain is an on-going process with new challenges emerging as pathogenic bacteria evolve and express enhanced virulence characteristics. Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes are two notorious pathogens responsible for staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP) and listeriosis: a foodborne intoxication and an infectious disease respectively. 13. Immune maturation and lymphocyte characteristics in relation to early gut bacteria exposure
Sammanfattning : At birth, the immune system is immature and the gut microbiota influences immune maturation. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and lactobacilli are part of the neonatal gut microbiota and have seemingly opposite effects on the immune system. S. LÄS MER
14. Structural Basis of Immune Receptor Binding by Staphylococcal Superantigens
Sammanfattning : Superantigens (SAgs) are toxins capable of inducing a massive immune response, leading to severe disease. They are secreted by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes, which produce the staphylococcal enterotoxins and streptococcal pyogenic exotoxins, respectively. LÄS MER
15. Regulatory mechanisms controlling T cell activity
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on work studying the immunoregulatory mechanisms that govern the balance between activation and inactivation of T lymphocytes. Most of the work has been carried out in an experimental system using a T cell receptor (TCR-Vb3) transgenic mouse strain to obtain a homogenous T-cell population and utilizing the properties of bacterial superantigens to induce T cell responses and unresponsiveness in vivo.
