31. Field Theories and Vortices with Nontrivial Geometry
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates aspects of field theories and soliton solutions with nontrivial topology. In particular we explore the following effective models: a limited sector of the scalar Electroweak theory called extended Abelian Higgs model, and a classical mechanics model derived from the low energy SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. 32. Studies on Natural Variation and Evolution of Photoperiodism in Plants
Sammanfattning : Photoperiodism refers to the organism’s ability to detect and respond to seasonal changes in the daily duration of light and dark and thus constitutes one of the most significant and complex examples of the interaction between the organism and its environment. This thesis attempts to describe the prevalence of variation in a photoperiodic response, its adaptive value, and its putative genetic basis in a common cruciferous weed, Capsella bursa-pastoris (Brassicaceae). 33. Maximal Unitarity at Two Loops : A New Method for Computing Two-Loop Scattering Amplitudes
Sammanfattning : The study of scattering amplitudes beyond one loop is necessary for precision phenomenology for the Large Hadron Collider and may also provide deeper insights into the theoretical foundations of quantum field theory. In this thesis we develop a new method for computing two-loop amplitudes, based on unitarity rather than Feynman diagrams. LÄS MER
34. Robust Platforms for Superconductivity : Disorder Robustness and Topological Density of States Peaks
Sammanfattning : We explore the connection between robust material platforms for superconductivity and the modern condensed matter physics paradigms of two-dimensional materials, topological states of matter, and odd-frequency superconductivity. Specifically, the recent discoveries of gapless topological matter and truly two-dimensional materials with graphene have greatly expanded the class of materials for which topology produces large, robust, even singular, density of states (DOS) peaks in the electronic structure that in turn are highly susceptible to new ordered states of matter, including superconductivity. 35. Electrostatic plasma waves associated with collisionless magnetic reconnection : Spacecraft observations
Sammanfattning : Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental plasma process where changes in magnetic field topology result in explosive energy conversion, plasma mixing, heating, and energization. In geospace, magnetic reconnection couples the Earth’s magnetosphere to the solar wind plasma, enabling plasma transport across the magnetopause. LÄS MER
