  1. 1. Development and applications of theoretical algorithms for simulations of materials at extreme conditions

    Författare :Igor Mosyagin; Igor Abrikosov; Sergey Simak; Andrei Postnikov; Linköpings universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : Materials at extreme conditions exhibit properties that differ substantially from ambient conditions. High pressure and high temperature expose anharmonic, non-linear behavior, and can provoke phase transitions among other effects. Experimental setups to study that sort of effects are typically costly and experiments themselves are laborious. LÄS MER

  2. 2. On string integrability : A journey through the two-dimensional hidden symmetries in the AdS/CFT dualities

    Sammanfattning : One of the main topics in the modern String Theory are the conjectured string/gauge (AdS/CFT) dualities. Proving such conjectures is extremely difficult since the gauge and string theory perturbative regimes do not overlap. In this perspective, the discovery of infinitely many conserved charges, i.e. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : The prediction of ground state properties of atomistic systems is of vital importance in technological advances as well as in the physical sciences. Fundamentally, these predictions are based on a quantum-mechanical description of many-electron systems. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Making Maps and Keeping Logs : Quantum Gravity from Classical Viewpoints

    Författare :Niklas Johansson; Ulf Danielsson; Jan de Boer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; String theory; black holes in string theory; Calabi-Yau geometry; flux compactifications; three-dimensional gravity; Mathematical physics; Matematisk fysik; Theoretical Physics; teoretisk fysik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis explores three different aspects of quantum gravity. First we study D3-brane black holes in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type IIB string theory. Using the OSV conjecture and a relation between topological strings and matrix models we show that some black holes have a matrix model description. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Pierced, Wrapped and Torn : Aspects of String Theory Compactifications

    Författare :Magdalena Larfors; Ulf Danielsson; Gary Shiu; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mathematical physics; Matematisk fysik; Theoretical Physics; teoretisk fysik;

    Sammanfattning : An outstanding problem in physics is to find a unified framework for quantum mechanics and general relativity. This is required for a better understanding of black holes and the early cosmology of the universe. String theory provides such a unification. In this thesis, we study aspects of compactifications of type IIB string theory. LÄS MER
