11. Influence of Oxidative Stress on Muscle and Bone
Sammanfattning : Reactive oxygen species (ROS) induce oxidative stress and although are primarily recognized for playing a deleterious biological role, they can be beneficial to cell systems. ROS are extremely short-lived and normally tightly regulated by antioxidant defence systems. LÄS MER
12. The Role of Mitochondrial Uncoupling in the Development of Diabetic Nephropathy
Sammanfattning : Diabetes is closely associated with increased oxidative stress, especially originating from the mitochondria. A mechanism to reduce increased mitochondria superoxide production is to reduce the mitochondria membrane potential by releasing protons across the mitochondria membrane. LÄS MER
13. Biocatalysed redox reactions in aqueous and organic media
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals mainly with biocatalysed methods for stereoselective reduction. D-(S)-chlorolactic acid was produced by both microbial and electromicrobial reduction of chloropyruvate using whole cells of Proteus vulgaris and an artificial electron mediator. The electron donor was formate, hydrogen gas or the cathode in an electrochemical cell. LÄS MER
14. A kinetic study of metabolite transfer in coupled two-enzyme reactions
Sammanfattning : There are two fundamentally different ways by which a metabolite can be transferred between enzymes in metabolic pathways. If the two sequential enzymes cannot form a complex with each other, the metabolite must first be released from the producing enzyme to the reaction medium and then be transported to the consuming enzyme, via the reaction medium, by free diffusion. 15. p53 transcriptional activity as a tool to uncover novel and diverse druggable targets in cancer
Sammanfattning : The transcription factor p53 is one of the most studied tumour suppressors with over 90 000 publications in PubMed referring to the protein. It is also the most frequently mutated gene across all cancer types with around 50% of cancers presenting as mutant p53, and when it is not mutated, it is frequently inactivated to circumvent its tumour suppressor function.
