  1. 1. Thermal endometrial destruction by means of a balloon catheter : experimental and clinical evaluation of a new form of treatment for menorrhagia

    Författare :Britt Friberg; Lund Obstetrik och gynekologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; andrologi; Obstetrik; gynekologi; sexuality; gynaecology; andrology; reproduction; Obstetrics; balloon catheter; thermal coagulation; Menorrhagia; endometrial destruction; saline infusion sonography; uterine thermal conductivity; reproduktion; sexualitet;

    Sammanfattning : Thermal endometrial destruction by means of a silicone balloon catheter is a new form of treatment for menorrhagia aimed at reducing menstrual blood loss. The purpose of the present work was to study, experimentally, the thermal effects on and the thermal conductivity of uterine tissue, to obtain a basis for the estimation of optimal treatment conditions by means of numerical analyses using a computer simulation model, to elucidate possible problems which may arise during the procedure, to evaluate how the patients tolerated this treatment and to judge which patients were suitable for this form of treatment and, finally, to study the uterine cavity after treatment and the long-term results of treatment. 2. 2. Computer Aided Angioplasty : Patient-specific arterial modeling and smooth 3D contact analysis of the stent-balloon-artery interaction

    Författare :Dimitrios Kiousis; Gerhard Holzapfel; Kenneth Runesson; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Contact; continuous surfaces; B-splines; balloon angioplasty; stenting; FEM; Bioengineering; Bioteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Paper A: In this paper, the development and implementation of a contact algorithm based on C2-continuous surface representations is discussed. In 3D contact simulations involving models with arbitrarily curved surfaces (as in the case of vessel walls), the discretization of the contact surfaces by means of facet-based techniques could lead to numerical instabilities and finally loss of quadratic convergence. 3. 3. Antibacterial effects of nitrite in urine

    Författare :Stefan Carlsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Nitrite; nitrate; nitric oxide; urinary tract infection; catheter-associated urinary tract infection; antimicrobial; Escherichia coli.;

    Sammanfattning : Urinary tract infections (UTI`s) are among the most common conditions causing individuals to seek medical care. In addition, catheter-associated infections account for most of the hospital-acquired UTI´s and is also a major source of resistant nosocomial pathogens. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Luminal nitric oxide : marker of intestinal inflammation

    Författare :Max Herulf; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Nitric oxide (NO) is a pluripotent molecule with several important physiological functions in the human body. Large amounts of NO are released by various cell types during inflammation, although the role of NO in the inflammatory process remains unclear. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Factors of importance for labor induction

    Författare :Tove Wallström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Background: What initiates the onset of labor is still not clarified, and it is debated whether expectant or active management is the best for the woman and the fetus. Active management means induction of labor (IOL) which is a very common obstetric intervention and is used in several situations. LÄS MER
