11. Eosinophils, their progenitors and T helper cells in allergic airway inflammation
Sammanfattning : Introduction: Asthma is a heterogeneous chronic lung disease associated with pronounced inflammatory changes in the airways. Eosinophilic inflammation is the trait that is best linked to symptoms and treatment responses in allergic asthma. LÄS MER
12. Th1, Th2 and Treg associated factors in relation to allergy
Sammanfattning : Background: Immune responses are often divided into T helper 1 (Th1), Th2 and Treg like immunity. Allergy is associated with Th2 like responses to allergens and possibly to reduced regulatory functions. LÄS MER
13. Feeding Lactobacillus paracasei ssp. paracasei strain F19 to infants during weaning : effects on adaptive immunity and gut microbial function
Sammanfattning : Introduction: Gut microbial composition has been associated with immune-mediated diseases. Breastfeeding yields a microbiota rich in bifidobacteria and promotes colonization by lactobacilli. Bifidobacteria and lactobacilli are considered health-promoting and are used as probiotics, i.e. LÄS MER
14. Mercury-induced autoimmunity : Genetics and immunoregulation
Sammanfattning : The existence of immune self-tolerance allows the immune system to mount responses against infectious agents, but not against self-molecular constitutes. Although self-tolerance is a robust phenomenon, in some individuals as well as in experimental models, the self-tolerance breaks down and as a result, a self-destructive autoimmune disease emerges. 15. Systemic sclerosis : vascular, pulmonary and immunological aspects
Sammanfattning : In systemic sclerosis (SSc), interstitial lung disease (ILD) and engagement of the vascular system lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate, in a consecutively included cohort of SSc (limited and diffuse) patients (n = 33), the T cell cytokine profile driving the disease in ILD and to explore the role of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and its inhibitor: tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading process leading to fibrous scarring and honey combing.
