6. Phenolics, Nitrogen, and Biotic Interactions : A Study of Phenylpropanoid Metabolites and Gene Expression in the Leaves of Populus tremula
Sammanfattning : European aspen (Populus tremula) is a fast growing tree species, rich in phenolic compounds. Defense theories suggest that soil nitrogen greatly influence plant allocation togrowth and defense; however, the allocation priorities are not well understood. LÄS MER
7. Nutritional and Microbiological Evaluation of Fermented Cereal Weaning Foods
Sammanfattning : Protein energy malnutrition (PEM) is the most serious nutritional problem affecting pre-school children in developing countries. The low energy and nutrient density of the diet and the presence of anti-nutritional factors contribute to this condition, as do the low frequency of feeding and transmission of diarrhoea-causing pathogens via the food. 8. Phenolic content in cereals and legumes. Influence of processing and effect on in vitro availability
Sammanfattning : Iron deficiency anaemia is highly prevalent in Tanzania, and one of the major causes is the low bioavailability of iron in the plant food staple diet. Cereals and legumes contain large amounts of compounds that inhibit iron absorption, e.g. LÄS MER
9. Feeding cassava foliage to sheep : nutrient properties and hydrogen cyanide toxicity
Sammanfattning : The potential of cassava foliage (Manihot esculenta Crantz) as a protein-rich feed in sheep production in Vietnam was examined by studying cassava foliage yield, hydrogen cyanide (HCN) content, toxicity and performance of lambs fed the foliage as a supplement. Cassava foliage fed ad libitum as a protein supplement to a basal diet of urea-treated rice straw gave similar lamb live weight gain (LWG) as diets supplemented with commercial concentrate or protein-rich foliage of stylosanthes (Stylosanthes guianensis) or jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus). 10. Fabrication of nanocellulose-based materials : Liquid crystalline phase formation and design of inorganic–nanocellulose hybrids
Sammanfattning : The increasing need to replace fossil fuels as a source of energy and raw material is resulting in extensive research efforts towards identifying and developing high performance materials and devices based on renewable sources. Cellulose being the most versatile and abundant biopolymer in nature is one of the obvious choices. LÄS MER
