1. Importance of tannins for responses of aspen to anthropogenic nitrogen enrichment
Sammanfattning : Boreal forests are often strongly nitrogen (N) limited. However, human activities are leading to increased N inputs into these ecosystems, through atmospheric N deposition and forest fertilization. LÄS MER
2. Phenolics, Nitrogen, and Biotic Interactions : A Study of Phenylpropanoid Metabolites and Gene Expression in the Leaves of Populus tremula
Sammanfattning : European aspen (Populus tremula) is a fast growing tree species, rich in phenolic compounds. Defense theories suggest that soil nitrogen greatly influence plant allocation togrowth and defense; however, the allocation priorities are not well understood. LÄS MER
3. Sainfoin tannins and their impact on protein degradation during silage and rumen fermentation and testing of novel techniques
Sammanfattning : The legume species sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) has been shown to contain tannins of particularly beneficial composition for ruminant nutrition. This thesis describes effects of condensed tannins on protein degradation in general and in sainfoin specifically. LÄS MER
4. Fungal assemblages in forest trees : influence of internal and external conditions
Sammanfattning : Forest trees host a plethora of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi) whose roles and diversity are still poorly understood despite the increased scientific interest for the past decades. The thesis focuses on the diversity of endophytic and epiphytic fungi in the aerial tissues of broadleaved trees. LÄS MER
5. Interactions between gray-sided voles (Clethrionomys rufocanus) and vegetation in the Fennoscandian tundra
Sammanfattning : I have, in this thesis, studied the interactions between gray-sided voles (Clethrionomys rufocanus) and tundra vegetation, on islands in, and mainland sites close to the lake Iešjávri, in northern Norway. As isolated islands are virtually free of predation, I have been able to compare plant-herbivore interactions in the presence and absence of predators. LÄS MER
