1. Infective Endocarditis : aspects of pathophysiology, epidemiology, management and prognosis
Sammanfattning : Infective endocarditis (IE) is a rare but complex disease that is fatal if untreated. With a modern combination of antimicrobial therapy and heart valve surgery, mortality is still 10-20 %. The structure of the endocarditis vegetation impedes the penetration of phagocytic cells such as monocytes and granulocytes. LÄS MER
2. Human polymorphonuclear granulocytes in inflammation : studies with an emphasis on nitric oxide
Sammanfattning : The function of the polymorphonuclear neutrophil granulocyte (PMN) is of vital importance in inflammation. For the defense against infections PMNs are armored with different weapons such as chemotaxis, phagocytosis and production of cytotoxic substances. LÄS MER
3. Intracellular free amino acids and nutritional status in children with chronic renal failure on different treatments
Sammanfattning : In untreated adult patients with chronic renal failure (CRF), and in chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and kidney-transplanted patients, typical plasma and muscle intracellular amino acid (AA) patterns have been described. Similar AA abnormalities to those seen in adult patients have been observed in plasma and muscle tissue of children with CRF, but no studies have been undertaken to evaluate the AA levels in plasma and muscle in children on CAPD or after kidney transplantation. 4. The role of anti-collagen type II antibodies in the pathogenesis and prognosis of rheumatoid arthritis
Sammanfattning : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) which affects 0.5-1% of the world population and is characterised by joint erosions and presence of the autoantibodies anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) and rheumatoid factor. LÄS MER
5. Human eosinophils and their activation by allergens via danger signal receptors
Sammanfattning : Human eosinophilic granulocytes are polymorphonuclear cells with a powerful arsenal of cytotoxic substances in their granules, which are mainly found in the gastrointestinal mucosa, and the respiratory and genitourinary tracts. Their physiological role is incompletely understood, although it is likely they protect the mucosal surfaces, perhaps by recognizing danger signals present on microorganisms or released from damaged tissue.
