  1. 1. Evolution of cellular complexity and other remarkable features in Gemmataceae : Complex bacterial lineages defy prokaryotic trends

    Författare :Mayank Mahajan; Siv G. E. Andersson; James O. McInerney; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular evolution; Planctomycetes; Gemmataceae; functional organization; signalling; protein interaction; peptidoglycan; membranes; cell division; radiation tolerance; Pfam; SCOP; comparative genomics; protein architecture; domain shuffling and orthologous clustering; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Biology; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylärbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Bacteria of the family Gemmataceae belong the phylum Planctomycetes and are remarkable because of their complex cellular architectures, previously considered to be traits exclusive to eukaryotes. This thesis provides clues to the atypical cell envelope, the enhanced radiotolerance and the amazing cellular complexity of these bacteria. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Assignment and assessment of orthology and gene function

    Författare :Christian Storm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Orthology; paralogy; homology; bootstrap; tree reconciliation; Pfam; functional annotation;

    Sammanfattning : Several genomes from different species have been sequenced over the last years, most notably the human genome. An important task of computational biology is to classify and functionally annotate the large amount of sequence data created by the genome sequencing projects. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Structural Information and Hidden Markov Models for Biological Sequence Analysis

    Författare :Jeanette Tångrot; Bo Kågström; Uwe H. Sauer; Erik Sonnhammer; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; HMM; structure alignment; protein structure; secondary structure; remote homologue; annotation; domain family; protein family; protein superfamily; protein fold recognition; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik;

    Sammanfattning : Bioinformatics is a fast-developing field, which makes use of computational methods to analyse and structure biological data. An important branch of bioinformatics is structure and function prediction of proteins, which is often based on finding relationships to already characterized proteins. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Orthology and protein domain architecture evolution

    Författare :Volker Hollich; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : A major factor behind protein evolution is the ability of proteins to evolve new domain architectures that encode new functions. Protein domains are widely considered to constitute the "atoms" of protein chains, acting as building blocks of proteins as well as evolutionary units. LÄS MER

  5. 5. From Sequence to Structure : Using predicted residue contacts to facilitate template-free protein structure prediction

    Författare :Mirco Michel; Arne Elofsson; Erik Lindahl; Johannes Söding; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; protein bioinformatics; protein structure prediction; contact prediction; machine learning; Biochemistry towards Bioinformatics; biokemi med inriktning mot bioinformatik;

    Sammanfattning : Despite the fundamental role of experimental protein structure determination, computational methods are of essential importance to bridge the ever growing gap between available protein sequence and structure data. Common structure prediction methods rely on experimental data, which is not available for about half of the known protein families. LÄS MER
