  1. 1. Grassland restoration : Connectivity, plant community change and cows

    Författare :Rozália E. Kapás; Sara Cousins; Adam Kimberley; Lars A. Brudvig; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; biodiversity; colonization; connectivity; dispersal; distance to species pool; diversity; grassland restoration; grassland specialist species; grazing livestock; habitat availability; plant community composition; restoration; semi-natural grassland; species richness; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Sammanfattning : The ecological significance of semi-natural grasslands is high because these habitats provide a home for a diverse flora and fauna and support a range of associated ecosystem services. Due to large-scale land-use changes the extent of grassland habitat has declined. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Restoration of semi-natural grasslands : Impacts on biodiversity, ecosystem services and stakeholder perceptions

    Författare :Emelie Waldén; Regina Lindborg; Sara A O Cousins; Erik Öckinger; Aveliina Helm; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biodiversity; Ecosystem services; Farmer; Landscape ecology; Plant; Policy; Restoration; Semi-natural grassland; Biologisk mångfald; Ekosystemtjänster; Landskapsekologi; Lantbrukare; Naturbetesmark; Policy; Restaurering; Växter; Äng; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : Humans play a major role shaping the living conditions for not only ourselves, but also all other species on Earth. In fact, some species-rich habitat types require human management to uphold the biodiversity and related ecosystem services. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Gradients of time and complexity : understanding how riparian and instream ecosystems recover after stream restoration

    Författare :Eliza Maher Hasselquist; Christer Nilsson; Stewart Rood; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bioassessment; biodiversity; boreal; bryophyte; chronosequence; complexity; diatom; geomorphology; habitat heterogeneity; hydromorphological; macroinvertebrate; macrophyte; nitrogen cycling; river restoration; riparian buffer; stable isotopes; succession; Sweden; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Why evaluations of the ecological outcomes of stream and river restoration have largely reported inconclusive or negative results has been the subject of much debate over the last decade or more. Understanding the reasons behind the lack of positive results is important for bettering future restoration efforts and setting realistic expectations for restoration outcomes. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Ecosystem functioning in streams : Disentangling the roles of biodiversity, stoichiometry, and anthropogenic drivers

    Författare :André Frainer; Roland Jansson; Brendan McKie; Jonathan Benstead; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; detrital food web; functional diversity; stoichiometry; nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations; recalcitrant carbon; spatial and temporal species distribution; pools and riffles; isotopes; leaf decomposition rates; land use; restoration; habitat complexity;

    Sammanfattning : What will happen to ecosystems if species continue to go extinct at the high rates seen today? Although ecosystems are often threatened by a myriad of physical or chemical stressors, recent evidence has suggested that the loss of species may have impacts on the functions and services of ecosystems that equal or exceed other major environmental disturbances. The underlying causes that link species diversity to ecosystem functioning include species niche complementarity, facilitative interactions, or selection effects, which cause process rates to be enhanced in more diverse communities. 5. 5. Unravelling Sustainability : The complex dynamics of emergent environmental governance and management systems at multiple scales

    Författare :Lucas Dawson; Ingrid Stjernquist; Marine Elbakidze; Raimonds Ernsteins; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Integrated adaptive environmental governance and management; Social-ecological system dynamics; Complex systems; Sustainability transitions; Sustainability strategies; Multi-level governance; Causal loop diagrams; Green Infrastructure; Landscape restoration; Habitat restoration; Biodiversity conservation; Comprehensive planning; Stakeholder participation; System thinking; Water Framework Directive; Sustainable water governance; Collaborative learning; Communities of practice; Knowledge management; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis adopts a complex systems approach to investigate the dynamic emergence of sustainable environmental governance and management systems in multiple contexts in Europe. Accelerating rates of environmental degradation across the world have called the legitimacy of previous environmental governance and management arrangements into question. LÄS MER
