6. Sex, Molecules, and Gene control : Ecophysiological and evolutionary aspects of key sponge species from Antarctic shallow waters and the deep sea
Sammanfattning : Very little is known about the ecophysiological aspects of Porifera (sponges) from Antarctica and North Atlantic, even though they are keystone components of these habitats. Being the earliest diverging metazoan lineage, sponges also play a fundamental role in our understanding of animal evolution. LÄS MER
7. Volatiles of Conifer Seedlings : Compositions and Resistance Markers
Sammanfattning : Pine weevils cause major damage to newly planted conifer seedlings in reforestation areas. However, recent findings indicate that small (“mini”) seedlings, planted at the age of 7-10 weeks, are gnawed less by pine weevils than the larger, conventionally planted seedlings. LÄS MER
8. Studies on anti-leukemic terpenoids from medicinal mushrooms and marine sponges with ChemGPS-NP-based targets investigation of lead compounds
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the anti-leukemic activity of terpenoids isolated from medicinal mushrooms and marine sponges, as well as their possible targets and mechanisms of action. In the first section, we focused on studying the triterpenoidal components of three triterpenoid-enriched medicinal mushrooms Antrodia cinnamomea, Ganoderma lucidum, and Poria cocos, which have been used in folk medicine for centuries and also developed into several contemporary marketed products. 9. Mistletoes and Thionins : as Selection Models in Natural Products Drug Discovery
Sammanfattning : The process of drug discovery from natural products starts with the selection of study object. In this project recent knowledge and methods are incorporated to investigate the process of such selection for pharmacognostic investigations. LÄS MER
10. Cytotoxic Compounds of Plant Origin – Biological and Chemical Diversity
Sammanfattning : The development of resistance by tumour cells to chemotherapeutic agents is a major problem in cancer treatments. One way to counter this is to find compounds with cytotoxic mechanisms other than those of drugs in clinical use today. LÄS MER
