2. Bioprospecting and deep-sea genetic resources in a fragmenting international law
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates if public international law manages to function as a coherent system in the case of deep-sea bioprospecting, where rules in three regimes provide seemingly inconsistent obligations for states. Based on an investigation of the development of bioprospecting and patenting of deep-sea genetic resources, the study explores how rules in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the World Trade Organization Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (WTO TRIPS) apply to such activities. 3. Oceanographic studies of the Baltic Sea with emphasis on sea ice and mixing processes
Sammanfattning : This thesis comprises of model estimates of the water and heat budgets, re-estimating of the budget of deep-water mixing energy, model studies of generation mechanisms for internal waves, sea ice dynamermics and finally sea ice monitoring. Common site for all the studies are the Baltic Sea. LÄS MER
4. Sex, Molecules, and Gene control : Ecophysiological and evolutionary aspects of key sponge species from Antarctic shallow waters and the deep sea
Sammanfattning : Very little is known about the ecophysiological aspects of Porifera (sponges) from Antarctica and North Atlantic, even though they are keystone components of these habitats. Being the earliest diverging metazoan lineage, sponges also play a fundamental role in our understanding of animal evolution. LÄS MER
5. Post-Glacial History of Sea-Level and Environmental Change in the Southern Baltic Sea
Sammanfattning : A new palaeoenvironmental record of the post-glacial history of the southern Baltic Sea (~14 ka to present) is presented. During this period, large water level and salinity changes occurred in the Baltic Basin due to opening and closing of connections to the North Atlantic. LÄS MER
