6. Linking Landscapes and Livelihoods : Ecosystem services as a lens in Sudano-Sahelian West Africa
Sammanfattning : Integrated landscape approaches are increasingly called for to reconcile multiple objectives from the perspectives of agriculture, forestry, poverty alleviation and biodiversity conservation. Sudano-Sahelian West Africa with low agricultural productivity and widespread poverty is a hotspot for these issues and has attracted international interest in interventions to improve livelihoods. 7. Primary Production in African Drylands : Quantifying Supply and Demand Using Earth Observation and Socio-ecological Data
Sammanfattning : The human-environment connection in the mostly rural drylands of sub-Saharan Africa forms a complex, interlinked system that provides ecosystem services. This system is susceptible to climatic variability that impacts the supply of its products, and high population growth, which impacts the demand for these products. LÄS MER
8. Satellite remote sensing of primary production in semi-arid Africa
Sammanfattning : With the challenges Africa faces with respect to the predicted warming due to climate change, the continents role in the global carbon cycle has been increasingly recognized. Earth observing satellites have played a significant role in the study of vegetation, particularly in Africa where climate stations are sparse. LÄS MER
9. Food security in a changing climate : The role of cropland intensification and land acquisitions across Africa
Sammanfattning : Food security is one of the world’s greatest challenges. The current food system shows an entanglement across the globe which means that local farmers reliant on subsistence agriculture no longer operate in isolation of larger-scale processes within the global economy or the changing biophysical system of the planet. 10. Computationally efficient methods in spatial statistics : Applications in environmental modeling
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, computationally efficient statistical models for large spatial environmental data sets are constructed. In the first part of the thesis, a method for estimating spatially dependent temporal trends is developed. A space-varying regression model, where the regression coefficients for the spatial locations are dependent, is used. LÄS MER
