1. Towards a semantics of linguistic time : exploring some basic time concepts with special reference to English and Krio
Sammanfattning : Using English and the West-African creole language Krio as the objects of investigation, this study proposes an analysis in which verbs and the paradigms pertaining to verbs are conceived of as being the only direct carriers of linguistic time encoding. 2. Making a difference : Exploring the teaching and learning of the English progressive aspect among Swedish 6th grade students
Sammanfattning : The aim of this study is to generate knowledge about what 6th grade students (12-13 years old) need to discern in order to be able to use the English progressive aspect (PROG) in a syntactically and semantically accurate way. This object of learning is not only complex, but it is unmarked grammatically in Swedish, which poses considerable difficulties for English language learners. LÄS MER
3. Language contact and structural change : An Old Finnish case study
Sammanfattning : The object of this study is to shed new light on both the influence exerted on Finnish by the Swedish language, and on the mechanisms by which language contact in structural domains takes place. It is argued that syntactic borrowing should be regarded as a subtype of reanalysis and extension rather than as an independent mechanism. LÄS MER

Sammanfattning : This thesis argues that it is relevant to make aspectual distincions in terms of progressivity and imperfectivity not only in languages like Russian or English but also in languages like German and Swedish, which traditionally are not considered aspect languages. This means that a distinction has to be made between aspectuality as a conceptual category and the grammatical category aspect (?Aspekt?), which needs a special morpho-syntactic expression. LÄS MER
