6. The role of striatal inhibition in the processing of cortical neuronal avalanches
Sammanfattning : The brain is spontaneously active even in the absence of any obvious motor actions or sensory perceptions. This so-called resting activity or ongoing activity reflects the myriads of neuronal interactions necessary for the brain to process past actions, allow for current inputs, and prepare for future decisions and responses. 7. Assessment of environmental contaminants' neurotoxicity : in vitro and in vivo experimental studies
Sammanfattning : Accumulating evidence over several decades shows that environmental contaminants may lead to neurodevelopmental alterations. An essential prerequisite to prevention is recognition of a chemical‟s ability to harm the developing nervous system. LÄS MER
8. Towards Better Understanding of Etiological Mechanisms at the Neuromuscular Junction
Sammanfattning : The neuromuscular junction (NMJ) serves as a model for understanding the mechanisms that determine communication between neurons and their target cells. Disorders of the NMJ can be either autoimmune or genetic (hereditary). LÄS MER
9. Modulation of the calcium-force relationship in smooth muscle by polyamines and metabolic inhibition
Sammanfattning : The relationship between intracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]i) and force in smooth muscle was investigated in receptor-coupled permeabilized preparations and by fluorimetry of the calcium indicator Fura 2 in intact smooth muscle. The time integral of spontaneous [Ca2+]i transients in the intact rat portal vein was decreased by cyanide and, during tonic contraction, cyanide reduced force without changing [Ca2+]i implying metabolic sensitivity of both membrane excitation and [Ca2+]i - activation of the contractile proteins. 10. Mechanisms of traumatic brain injury in the rat : Morphological consequences and neurotrophic responses
Sammanfattning : Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of death and disability in the Western world. especially in young people. Understanding the pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury is the basis for further development of better therapeutic strategies for such patients. LÄS MER
