16. Role of charge and spin fluctuations and their interplay in solids : A Green’s function approach
Sammanfattning : Due to the large number of electrons, solid state physics boils down to many-body approximations in which only selected types of collective excitations are taken into account, guided by the emergent properties of the material under study. In this thesis, the collective excitations of primary interest are electronic charge and spin fluctuations(plasmons and magnons) and nuclear charge fluctuations (phonons). LÄS MER

18. Decision support for sustainable water security
Sammanfattning : Society’s large dependence on water, in combination with climate, socio-economic and demographic changes, places a massive pressure on our freshwater resources. As a result, water crisis, defined as a significant decline in the available quality and quantity of freshwater, is now considered to be among the most critical global risks to society. LÄS MER
19. Origins and Adaptation in Humans : A Case Study of Taste and Lifestyle
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I use population genetics and statistical approaches to investigate early human demography, infer local adaptation in diverse sets of populations, and study the genetic basis for taste perception. In the first paper, I examine the genomic evidence for a severe bottleneck, which has been suggested based on paleontological and climate studies to coincide with the emergence of anatomically modern humans. 20. Vacuum Dewatering of Cellulosic Materials : New insights into transport phenomena in the papermaking process
Sammanfattning : Working towards sustainable development within the forest industry, the dewatering of pulp and paper must be fully understood along with the dewatering of other cellulose-based materials. Huge amounts of energy are used during paper manufacturing so there is a potential for making the processes more energy-efficient. LÄS MER
