  1. 6. Patterns and Processes of Molecular Evolution in Rickettsia

    Författare :Haleh Amiri; Dan Andersson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Species of the genus Rickettsia are obligate intracellular parasites of the a-proteobacterial subdivision. It has been suggested that obligate intracellular bacteria have evolved from free-living bacteria with much larger genome sizes. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Epidemiological and Bacteriological Aspects of Spotted Fever Rickettsioses in Humans, Vectors and Mammals in Sweden

    Författare :Karin Elfving; Kenneth Nilsson; Eva Hjelm; Björn Olsen; Tomas Bergström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Rickettsia helvetica; ticks; cultivation; serology; polymerase chain reaction PCR ; DNA sequencing; western blot; electron microscopy; meningitis; seroprevalence;

    Sammanfattning : Rickettsiae are obligate intracellular gram-negative bacteria transmitted by arthropod vectors. Rickettsiae sometimes cause disease in humans, typically with high fever, headache and occasionally an eschar.In Sweden, Rickettsia helvetica, belonging to the spotted fever group, is the only tick-transmitted rickettsia found free in nature. 3. 8. The Origin of the Genus Flavivirus and the Ecology of Tick-Borne Pathogens

    Författare :John H.-O. Pettersson; Thomas Jaenson; Sven Bergström; Kenneth Nilsson; Mikael Thollesson; Per-Eric Lindgren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Flavivirus; Virus dating; Molecular dating; Biogeography; Ixodes ricinus; Minimum infection rate; TBE; Tick-borne encephalitis virus; Rickettsia helvetica; Anaplasma phagocytophilum; Infection prevalence; RT-PCR; Biology with specialization in Systematics; Biologi med inriktning mot systematik;

    Sammanfattning : The present thesis examines questions related to the temporal origin of the Flavivirus genus and the ecology of tick-borne pathogens. In the first study, we date the origin and divergence time of the Flavivirus genus. It has been argued that the first flaviviruses originated after the last glacial maximum. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Dispersal of ticks and their microorganisms by African-Western Palaearctic migratory birds

    Författare :Tove Hoffman; Björn Olsen; Åke Lundkvist; Kenneth Nilsson; Johan Normark; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :African-Western Palaearctic; migratory birds; Ixodidae; Hyalomma rufipes; Ixodes; Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever virus; Anaplasma phagocytophilum; Francisella; Midichloria; Rickettsia aeschlimannii; PCR; microfluidic qPCR; metagenomics; Biologi; Biology;

    Sammanfattning : In Europe, tick-borne diseases are the most widespread and common vector-borne diseases and their geographical distribution is increasing. The dispersal of ticks depends on the movements of their vertebrate hosts. Avian hosts are more likely to be involved in long-distance range expansion of ticks due to their migration pattern. 5. 10. Molecular evolutionary studies of genome degradation in bacteria

    Författare :Jan O. Andersson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : The genus Rickettsia belongs to the α-proteobacteria and consists of obligate intracellular bacteria, which often are pathogenic for humans. All Rickettsia have small genomes, highly adapted to an intracellular lifestyle. LÄS MER
