2. The Origin of the Genus Flavivirus and the Ecology of Tick-Borne Pathogens
Sammanfattning : The present thesis examines questions related to the temporal origin of the Flavivirus genus and the ecology of tick-borne pathogens. In the first study, we date the origin and divergence time of the Flavivirus genus. It has been argued that the first flaviviruses originated after the last glacial maximum. LÄS MER
3. Phylogenetic Relationships of Silene sect. Melandrium and Allied Taxa (Caryophyllaceae), as Deduced from Multiple Gene Trees
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on phylogenetic relationships among some of the major lineages in Silene subgenus Behenantha (Caryophyllaceae) using DNA sequences from multiple, potentially unlinked gene regions from a large taxonomic and geographic sample. Both traditional phylogenetic analyses and a strategy to infer species trees and gene trees in a joint approach are used. LÄS MER
4. Controversies over taxonomic and nomenclatural instability: an empirical approach
Sammanfattning : Taxonomic names serve two important functions: they reflect hypotheses about the existence of taxa, and they serve as the primary means to communicate about biodiversity. The dual purpose of names is a source of conflict and misunderstanding among taxonomists and end-users of taxonomy. LÄS MER
5. Phylogeny and Taxonomy of Childia (Acoela) : New characters for unraveling acoel phylogenies from molecules, ultrastructure, immunocytochemistry and confocal microscopy
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents a comprehensive phylogenetic and taxonomic study of an acoel subgroup, the Childiidae. Members of this taxon are characterized by well-developed male copulatory organs with conical/cylindrical stylets. LÄS MER
