16. Characteristics of Particulate Emissions from Low Temperature Combustion and Renewable Fuels : Aerosol Mass Spectrometry of Refractory Carbonaceous Particles
Sammanfattning : Particulate air pollution is one of the major causes of premature death in the world, and combustion-derived soot emissions contribute strongly to the particulate pollution to which humans are exposed. Black carbon (BC) is one such emission and denotes soot with strong light absorption in the ultraviolet to infrared spectrum. LÄS MER
17. Intracellular radicals in neutrophils - processing and functional implications
Sammanfattning : Neutrophils are the most abundant leukocyte in human blood and essential components of our defense against microbial pathogens. These cells can neutralize microbial pathogens by phagocytosis, which involves engulfment and degradation of microbes intracellularly, as well as by the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which are structures released from neutrophils made up of DNA and proteins that capture microbes extracellularly. 18. Mechanisms of leukemia-induced immunosuppression
Sammanfattning : This thesis aimed to define the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS), produced by the NADPH oxidase of myeloid cells, in the regulation of lymphocyte function with focus on ROS-induced dysfunction of natural killer (NK) cells and T lymphocytes in myeloid leukemia. In Paper I, a novel mechanism is presented by which specifically activated T lymphocytes evade inactivation by ROS after antigen presentation. LÄS MER
19. Energy metabolism and angiogenesis in atherosclerosis and cancer
Sammanfattning : Energy metabolism requires supply of glucose and oxygen. In atherosclerotic plaques and cancer tumors, there are local areas with mismatch in demand and supply of oxygen and nutrients. The resulting cellular energy imbalance may promote energy failure and stimulation of angiogenesis. LÄS MER
20. Targeting NOX2 in cancer
Sammanfattning : Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are short-lived, toxic derivatives of oxygen that are produced during mitochondrial respiration and by NADPH oxidases (NOX). By enzymatically generating ROS, the myeloid cell NOX2 plays a critical role in defense against bacteria and other microorganisms. LÄS MER
