6. Genes and proteins controlled by cGMP-PKG during retinal degeneration
Sammanfattning : prevalence was reported as 1:3000-4000 worldwide, making it the main reason for blindness in the working population in industrial countries. The mutations of over 70 genes have been related to this genetic disorder, and there is generally no effective treatment, except for gene therapy for the RPE65 mutations. LÄS MER
7. Hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells and potentials for application in fetal cell replacement therapy
Sammanfattning : Fetal cell replacement therapy or in utero hematopoietic cell transplantation (IUHCT) is proposed as a non-myeloablative alternative to bone marrow transplantation (BMT) for a number of inborn immunologic, hematologic and metabolic disorders. IUHCT represents the method through which variable amounts of natural or genetically modified hematopoietic cells can be transferred to the fetal recipient in hope of correcting the disorder and preventing postnatal permanent organ damage. 8. Adaptation to microenvironmental stress in glioblastoma. Mechanistic studies and potential targets
Sammanfattning : Although the overall mortality in cancer is steadily decreasing, major groups of patients still respond poorly to available treatments. The key clinical challenge addressed in the present thesis work relates to the inherent adaptive capacity of glioblastoma (GBM) tumors, resulting in treatment resistance and dismal prognosis. LÄS MER
9. Detection and quantification of lipid-mediated siRNA delivery to the cytosol
Sammanfattning : Cancer is one of the leading causes of death globally. Novel therapeutics is urgently needed to advance treatment, especially for generalized disease where current treatment options have a poor prognosis. In particular, targeted therapy that can address genetic changes would be of great value. LÄS MER
10. "A syndrome so characteristic" Molecular and clinical studies of Fusobacterium necrophorum and Lemierre's syndrome
Sammanfattning : Lemierre’s syndrome is caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum and involves tonsillitis, jugular vein thrombophlebitis and septic pulmonary emboli. The first studies underlying this thesis focused on bacterial interaction with coagulation. LÄS MER
