1. Heart Valve Surgery : Preoperative Assessment and Clinical Outcome
Sammanfattning : A more global analysis of the outcome of heart valve surgery is desirable to reflect the actual benefit for the patient. This thesis focuses on the preoperative assessment of the patient, and the outcome after surgery with regard to operative mortality, long-term survival, valve-related complications, and quality of life. 2. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles, a novel tracer in breast cancer surgery
Sammanfattning : The most common surgical choice of treatment in breast cancer is breast-conserving surgery (BCS) together with sentinel lymph node biopsy (SNB). Around 10% of breast cancer diagnosis are ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIO) are a novel tracer for sentinel lymph node (SN) detection. LÄS MER
3. Optimizing the magnetic tracer technique for sentinel lymph node detection and tumour localization in breast cancer surgery
Sammanfattning : Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women, and the primary treatment modalities are still breast-conserving surgery (BCS) and sentinel lymph node dissection (SLND) in most cases. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIO) are gaining momentum as a tracer for sentinel lymph node detection. LÄS MER
4. Perioperative Myocardial Damage and Morbidity after Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
Sammanfattning : The aims of this project were to investigate the impact of perioperative myocardial damage on morbidity and mortality after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), to determine whether biochemical marker levels after CABG correlate to perioperative myocardial infarct size, and to assess the long-term morbidity after CABG, in particular to determine whether women do worse. The studies were conducted in patients who had undergone isolated, primary CABG. 5. Magnetic resonance imaging, electroneurographic, and clinical findings in Bell's palsy
Sammanfattning : Seventy-two patients were examined in order to learn more about the pathophysiology of Bell's palsy and to assess the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as well as electroneurographic and clinical tests in predicting the outcome in patients with this disease. In 12 of 20 patients (60%) an increased signal intensity in the paranasal sinuses was evident on T2-weighted MRI scans in the early stage of palsy, and in six of the positive patients the high signal intensity had disappeared by the time of the follow-up examination.
