1. The Chorda Tympani Nerve : Role in Taste Impairment in Middle Ear Disease and after Ear Surgery
Sammanfattning : The chorda tympani nerve, also known as the taste nerve, runs uncovered through the middle ear cavity, a localization that exposes the nerve to pathological processes and surgical trauma in the middle ear. People operated on for otosclerosis tend to complain more about postoperative taste disturbances than those operated on for chronic otitis media. LÄS MER
2. An exploration of the mechanisms behind peripheral nerve injury
Sammanfattning : Despite surgical innovation, the sensory and motor outcome after peripheral nerve injury is incomplete. In this thesis, the biological pathways potentially responsible for the poor functional recoveries were investigated in both the distal nerve stump/target organ, spinal motoneurons and dorsal root ganglia (DRG). 3. Magnetic resonance imaging, electroneurographic, and clinical findings in Bell's palsy
Sammanfattning : Seventy-two patients were examined in order to learn more about the pathophysiology of Bell's palsy and to assess the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as well as electroneurographic and clinical tests in predicting the outcome in patients with this disease. In 12 of 20 patients (60%) an increased signal intensity in the paranasal sinuses was evident on T2-weighted MRI scans in the early stage of palsy, and in six of the positive patients the high signal intensity had disappeared by the time of the follow-up examination. 4. Clusterin and Megalin in The Spinal Cord
Sammanfattning : Nerve injury induces up-regulation of the chaperone protein clusterin in affected neurons and adjacent astrocytes but the functional significance of this response is unclear. We find that motor neuron survival is significantly greater in clusterin(+/+) compared to (-/-) mice. LÄS MER
5. On dopamine neurons : nerve fiber outgrowth and L-DOPA effects
Sammanfattning : Parkinson’s disease is a disorder mainly characterized by progressive degeneration of dopamine producing neurons in the substantia nigra of the midbrain. The most commonly used treatment strategy is to pharmacologically restore the lost function by the administration of the dopaminergic precursor L-DOPA. LÄS MER
