  1. 1. Charged Polymers at Spherical Surfaces

    Författare :Anna Akinchina; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fysikalisk kemi; Physical chemistry; Monte Carlo simulation; diblock polyampholyte brushes; polymer brushes; persistent length; stiffness; complexation; macroion; polyelectrolyte; polyion;

    Sammanfattning : Two separate topics in the area of colloidal chemistry have been investigated by the use of molecular modeling: the structural properties of polyion?macroion complexes and of diblock polyampholyte brushes. The main results were obtained by the use of Monte Carlo simulation in the framework of the primitive model, and in the case of polyampholyte brushes the simulation results were also complemented by lattice mean-field calculations. 2. 2. Swelling and Mechanical Properties of Polymer Gels: Salt, Macroion and Network Topology Effects

    Författare :Samuel Edgecombe; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; volume decrease upon uniaxial extension; interpenetrating networks; loose-end effects; polydispersity effects; macroion deswelling; salt deswelling; polymer gels; polyelectrolyte gels; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : The work in this thesis concerns polymer gels, especially their swelling and mechanical properties modelled using a coarse-grained model of polyelectrolytes. The method used to study polymer gels was molecular simulation utilising the simulation package MOLSIM. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Structure and Phase Stability of Polyelectrolyte-Macroion Solutions

    Författare :Marie Skepö; Kemiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi; hydrophobicity; spatially distributed interaction sites; protein-polymer interaction; Monte Carlo Simulations; redissolution; phase separation; cluster; complex; Polyelectrolytes; macroions;

    Sammanfattning : Polyelectrolytes are polymers bearing ionisable groups, which, in polar solvents, can dissociate into charged polymer chains (polyelectrolytes) and small counterions. In aqueous solutions, polyelectrolytes interact strongly with other macroions and in particular they tend to associate with objects of opposite charge and form complexes. LÄS MER

  4. 4. On the phase behaviour of hydrogels : A theory of macroion-induced core/shell equilibrium

    Författare :Jonas Gernandt; Per Hansson; Göran Frenning; Renko de Vries; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polymer; polyelectrolyte; surfactant; thermodynamics; elasticity; Pharmaceutical Science; Farmaceutisk vetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Colloidal macroions are known to interact very strongly with oppositely charged polyionic hydrogels. Sometimes this results in a non-uniform distribution of the macroions within the gel, a phenomenon that is not fully understood. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Phase Phenomena in Polymer Networks : Empirical Studies on the Influence of Hydrophobicity, Charge Density and Crosslinks on Macroion-Induced Phase Transitions in Polyelectrolyte Gels

    Författare :Martin Andersson; Per Hansson; Lennart Piculell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Gel; microgel; microsphere; polystyrenesulfonate; polyacrylate; polyacrylicacid; DoTAB; DoTAC; CTAB; CTAC; network; polyelectrolyte; complex salt; self assembly; phase behaviour; hysteresis; thermodynamic; core-shell; lysozyme; cytochrome c; microscopy; micromanipulator; elastomer; elastic; protein; surfactant; phase behaviour; sorting; PHARMACY; FARMACI; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : The thesis concerns polyelectrolyte gels in contact with oppositely charged proteins and surfactant micelles, and includes of four papers (I-IV). In paper I confocal Raman spectroscopy was introduced as a method to trace micelles and investigate the structure of gel-surfactant complexes, in phase separated gel spheres. LÄS MER
