  1. 1. Structure and Phase Stability of Polyelectrolyte-Macroion Solutions

    Författare :Marie Skepö; Kemiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi; hydrophobicity; spatially distributed interaction sites; protein-polymer interaction; Monte Carlo Simulations; redissolution; phase separation; cluster; complex; Polyelectrolytes; macroions;

    Sammanfattning : Polyelectrolytes are polymers bearing ionisable groups, which, in polar solvents, can dissociate into charged polymer chains (polyelectrolytes) and small counterions. In aqueous solutions, polyelectrolytes interact strongly with other macroions and in particular they tend to associate with objects of opposite charge and form complexes. LÄS MER

  2. 2. On the phase behaviour of hydrogels : A theory of macroion-induced core/shell equilibrium

    Författare :Jonas Gernandt; Per Hansson; Göran Frenning; Renko de Vries; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polymer; polyelectrolyte; surfactant; thermodynamics; elasticity; Pharmaceutical Science; Farmaceutisk vetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Colloidal macroions are known to interact very strongly with oppositely charged polyionic hydrogels. Sometimes this results in a non-uniform distribution of the macroions within the gel, a phenomenon that is not fully understood. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Polyelectrolyte - Surfactant Interactions in Dilute Suspensions. A Study Based on Monte Carlo simulations and Mean-Field Calcultations

    Författare :Torsten Wallin; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aggregation number; linear charge density; chain flexibility; mean-field; calculation; simulation; Monte Carlo; cmc; cac; interaction; electrostatic; charged; micelle; polyelectrolyte; surfactant; hydrophilic; hydrophobic; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : The complexation of macroions or charged micelles and oppositely charged polyelectrolytes was studied by the use of Monte-Carlo simulations and mean field calculations. The Monte-Carlo simulations were performed on a simple model system with the emphasis on the electrostatic interaction, (i) polyelectrolyte rigidity, (ii) polyelectrolyte linear charge density, (iii) surfactant tail length, and (iv) the polyelectrolyte concentration. 4. 4. Swelling and Mechanical Properties of Polymer Gels: Salt, Macroion and Network Topology Effects

    Författare :Samuel Edgecombe; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; volume decrease upon uniaxial extension; interpenetrating networks; loose-end effects; polydispersity effects; macroion deswelling; salt deswelling; polymer gels; polyelectrolyte gels; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : The work in this thesis concerns polymer gels, especially their swelling and mechanical properties modelled using a coarse-grained model of polyelectrolytes. The method used to study polymer gels was molecular simulation utilising the simulation package MOLSIM. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Charged Polymers: From DNA to Polyampholytes

    Författare :Malek O Khan; Beräkningskemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; computational steering; DNA condensation; ion correlations; electrostatic interactions; colloidal stability; polyampholytes; Monte Carlo simulations; polyelectrolytes; Theoretical chemistry; quantum chemistry; Teoretisk kemi; kvantkemi;

    Sammanfattning : Three main themes are outlined in this thesis: Polyelectrolytes/DNA : In a living cell, DNA molecules have a compact conformation in order to fit in, while in a test tube they will take on an expanded cylindrical shape, due to the negative phosphate groups along the DNA molecule. With the help of computer simulations it has been shown that like-charged monomers of a poly- electrolyte can attract each other if the counterions are taken into account. LÄS MER
