  1. 1. The sensory morphology of insect pollinators : From structure to behaviour and ecology

    Författare :Zahra Moradinour; Emily Baird; Karl Gotthard; Karin Nordstrom; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Insect pollinators; butterfly; bumblebee; sensory system; developmental temperature; light habitat; Functional Zoomorphology; funktionell zoomorfologi;

    Sammanfattning : Insect pollinators play an important role in balancing our ecosystems and maintaining plant and food diversity. Due to anthropogenic activities such as global warming, habitat loss and degradation, pesticides, and pathogens, many pollinator populations have been undergoing drastic declines in recent decades. 2. 2. Getting to know Trioza apicalis (Homoptera: Psylloidea) – a Specialist Host-Alternating Insect with a Tiny Olfactory System

    Författare :Lina Kristoffersen; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physiology of invertebrates; Djurs anatomi och morfologi; Entomologi; plant parasitology; Entomology; Ekologi; Ecology; glomeruli; antennal lobe; olfactory receptor neurons electrophysiology; antennae; behaviour; olfaction; Sternorrhyncha; psyllid; Ryggradslösa djurs fysiologi; animal morphology; Animal anatomy; växtparasitologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis comprises ecological, morphological and physiological studies of the carrot psyllid Trioza apicalis (Homoptera: Psylloidea) with particular focus on olfaction. Data from inventories of winter habitats suggest that T. apicalis prefer Picea abies over Pinus sylvestris and Juniperus communis as winter hosts. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Neuromechanical basis of airflow-dependent antennal positioning in hawkmoths

    Författare :Dinesh Natesan; Örjan Ekeberg; Sanjay P. Sane; Volker Dürr; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; insect antennae; antennal positioning; antennal hair plates; Böhm’s bristles; Johnston’s organs; control theory; hierarchical neural circuits; tuneable feedback loop; flexible reflexes; Computer Science; Datalogi;

    Sammanfattning : Fast behaviors, seen in varied life forms, are often considered to be stereotypic and reflexive and the control neural circuits to be hard-wired. However, many such reflexes have been shown to respond in a context-dependent manner. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Odour detection in the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria: antennal structure and function

    Författare :Samuel Adhola Ochieng'; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; insect antennae; Olfaction; chemoreceptors; receptor neuron; electrophysiology; aggregation pheromone; SEM; TEM; Djurfysiologi; Animal physiology; Animal ethology and psychology; Djurs etologi och psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : The desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, is a polymorphic insect that occurs in two morphological and physiological distinct phases, solitary and gregarious, depending on population density. The two phases are reversible at any developmental stage. The gregarious phase produces and uses stage-specific pheromones, that keep the swarm together. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Fatty Acyl Reductases and Fatty Acyl Desaturases. Deciphering the biosynthesis of species-specific moth female sex pheromones from common fatty acids

    Författare :Åsa Hagström; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Moth; pheromone; insect; evolution; fatty acyl desaturase; fatty acyl reductase; endoplasmic reticulum; fatty acid biosynthesis; GFP; heterologous expression; phylogeny; cell factory; lepidoptera;

    Sammanfattning : Moths (Lepidoptera) are dependent on female produced pheromones, chemical signals, for attracting a mate. Pheromones are most commonly made up by saturated and/or unsaturated fatty acid derived alcohols, acetates, and/or aldehydes that are produced by a set of enzymes in the female pheromone gland.
