1. Vegetation changes on Swedish mires : Effects of raised temperature and increased nitrogen and sulphur influx
Sammanfattning : Since the start of the industrialisation, the deposition of nitrogen and sulphur and the atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased. The main objectives of this study were to find how these changes in climate and deposition can change the vegetation of mire ecosystems and the growth of Sphagnumspecies. LÄS MER
2. Silencing and DNA double-strand break repair in budding yeast
Sammanfattning : Transcriptional silencing that makes large chromosomal domains inaccessible for the transcriptional apparatus is nucleated at DNA elements called silencers. In K.lactis a 102bp HMLα silencer was defined revealing three distinct protein-binding regions (A, B, and C) that were required for silencing of HMLα. LÄS MER
3. Biomass and Nutrient Status of Benthic Algae in Lakes
Sammanfattning : For a complete picture of the lake ecosystem, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms regulating biomass and nutrient status (nutrient limitation, optimal supply, or surplus) of benthic algae, which are important primary producers and a food resource for grazers. This thesis gives an overview of the natural variation of benthic algae at different scales of space and time and on different substrates, and unravels some of the underlying factors. LÄS MER
4. Host-seeking activity of Ixodes ricinus in relation to the epidemiology of Lyme borreliosis in Sweden
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines seasonal, diel and vertical distribution patterns of activity of host-seeking Ixodes ricinus (L.) ticks at three localities in south-central Sweden. In addition, by examining the prevalence of infection in ticks with Lyme borreliosis (LB) spirochetes, Borrelia burgdorferi s. LÄS MER
5. Local Adaptation, Countergradient Variation and Ecological Genetics of Life-history Traits in Rana Temporaria
Sammanfattning : The main aim of this work was to identify local adaptation processes in amphibian populations, thereby improving the general understanding of genetics and mechanisms behind the evolution and maintenance of biological diversity. Phenotypic and genetic variation in life-history traits was studied within and between populations common frog (Rana temporaria) populations along a 1600 km transect from southern Sweden to northern Finland.
