1. Blood pressure in advanced age : with focus on epidemiology, cognitive impairment and mortality
Sammanfattning : The general conception is that blood pressure increases with age, but that diastolic blood pressure (DBP) starts decreasing in the elderly. There are, however, indications that systolic blood pressure (SBP) might also decline in advanced age, but further studies are needed to establish whether this is true. LÄS MER

3. The relationship between reduced renal function and cardiovascular disease
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the relationship between measures of renal function and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with hypertension (the NORDIL study) and in the healthy population (Malmö Diet and Cancer Study, MDC) and whether antihypertensive treatment response and the risk of CVD is affected by genetic variation of a regulator of the renal amiloroide sensitive sodium channel (NORDIL). In study 1 we tested creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with Cockroft-Gault (CG) and the MDRD equations and also microalbuminuria (MA) as predictors of CVD, stroke and CVD death. 4. Genetic predisposition to salt sensitivity and cardiovascular disease
Sammanfattning : Abstract The average amount of salt ingested is about 10 grams daily compared to less than one gram in pre-historic life. Salt, althought somewhat debated, is considered a risk factor for elevated blood pressure and end organ damage beyond the blood pressure effect. LÄS MER
5. THE VASOPRESSIN SYSTEM IN DIABETES MELLITUS, OBESITY AND THE METABOLIC SYNDROME
Sammanfattning : Background: Animal studies suggest that the arginine vasopressin (AVP) system plays a role in glucose and fat metabolism, but data from humans are limited. Method and results: We analysed plasma copeptin (copeptin), a stable C-terminal fragment of the AVP pro-hormone in the large, Swedish, population-based cohort Malmö Diet and Cancer Study Cardiovascular Cohort (MDC-CC, n=6103).
