  1. 6. Computational Problems in Modeling Evolution and Inferring Gene Families

    Författare :Mehmood Alam Khan; Lars Arvestad; Jens Lagergren; Christophe Dessimoz; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolution; Phylogenetics; Lateral Gene Transfer; Gene Families; Clustering; Datalogi; Computer Science;

    Sammanfattning : Over the last few decades, phylogenetics has emerged as a very promising field, facilitating a comparative framework to explain the genetic relationships among all the living organisms on earth. These genetic relationships are typically represented by a bifurcating phylogenetic tree — the tree of life. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Prognostic markers in acute myeloid leukemia : A candidate gene approach

    Författare :Ingrid Jakobsen; Kourosh Lotfi; Henrik Gréen; Anna Fyrberg; Christian Thiede; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The standard treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) consists of induction chemotherapy, most commonly daunorubicin together with the nucleoside analogue cytarabine (Ara-C), followed by consolidation chemotherapy and in selected cases allogenic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT). Despite a high initial response rate, a considerable proportion of all AML cases eventually suffer from relapse and the five-year overall survival rate in patients >60 years is only around 15%. 3. 8. Evolutionary Analysis of the Insulin-Relaxin Gene Family from the Perspective of Gene and Genome Duplication Events

    Författare :Robert Piotr Olinski; Finn Hallböök; Mike Thorndyke; Pierre Pontarotti; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Neurosciences; insulin; relaxin; insulin-like protein; gene duplication; paralogous region; Ciona intestinalis; conserved synteny; ortholog; Drosophila melanogaster; Neurovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Paralogs arise by duplications and belong to families. Ten paralogs (insulin; IGF-1 and -2; INSL3-6 and 3-relaxins) constitute the human insulin-relaxin family. The aim of this study was to outline the duplications that gave rise to the vertebrate insulin-relaxin genes and the chromosomal regions in which they reside. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Exploring the role of gene duplications in plant-insect interactions

    Författare :Hanna Nicole Dort; Christopher Wheat; Noah Whiteman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plant-insect interactions; comparative genomics; detoxification; transcriptomics; nitrile-specifier proteins; butterflies; populationsgenetik; Population Genetics;

    Sammanfattning : As evolutionary biologists, we are often curious about the genomic origins of our favorite adaptations. Although some innovations certainly arose de novo, many more originated through the process of whole-gene or within-gene duplication. LÄS MER

  5. 10. The relationship between orthology, protein domain architecture and protein function

    Författare :Kristoffer Forslund; Erik Sonnhammer; Cristina Al-Khalili Szigyarto; Sarah Teichmann; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; homology; orthology; paralogy; gene duplications; protein function prediction; low-complexity regions; protein domains; domain architecture evolution; introns; intron position conservation; orthology conjecture; domain grammar hypothesis; biokemi; inriktning teoretisk kemi; Biochemistry with Emphasis on Theoretical Chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Lacking experimental data, protein function is often predicted from evolutionary and protein structure theory. Under the 'domain grammar' hypothesis the function of a protein follows from the domains it encodes. LÄS MER
