1. Analysis of Degradation Products from Wood and Methods for Detoxification of Lignocellulose Hydrolysates
Sammanfattning : In order to produce fuel ethanol from lignocellulose, it is necessary to hydrolyse the sugar-containing constituents hemicellulose and cellulose. During acid hydrolysis, a number of compounds are formed or liberated in addition to the fermentable monomeric sugars. LÄS MER
2. Ethanol from Lignocellulose - Fermentation Inhibitors, Detoxification and Genetic Engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for Increased Resistance
Sammanfattning : Ethanol can be produced from lignocellulose by first hydrolysing the material to sugars, and then fermenting the hydrolysate with the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Hydrolysis using dilute sulphuric acid has advantages over other methods, however, compounds which inhibit fermentation are generated during this kind of hydrolysis. LÄS MER
3. Fermentation Inhibitors in the Production of Bio-ethanol: Detoxification of Lignocellulose Hydrolyzates and Physiological Effects of Furfural on Yeast
Sammanfattning : Different strategies to overcome inhibitor problems in the production of bio-ethanol from lignocellulose hydrolyzates with the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae were examined. The strategies included detoxification prior to fermentation and in situ detoxification of furfural. A strain development for improved inhibitor tolerance was also initiated. LÄS MER
4. Exploring the role of gene duplications in plant-insect interactions
Sammanfattning : As evolutionary biologists, we are often curious about the genomic origins of our favorite adaptations. Although some innovations certainly arose de novo, many more originated through the process of whole-gene or within-gene duplication. LÄS MER
5. Ethanol Production from Lignocellulosic Materials: Potential of Continuous Cultivation, Immobilisation, and Zygomycetous Fungi
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the production of bio-ethanol, a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, from dilute-acid lignocellulosic hydrolysate in a continuous immobilised cell system and fermentation of the hydrolysate by a zygomycete organism, M. indicus. LÄS MER
