  1. 6. Patterns of small-scale coastal fisheries and local fisheries management in Tanzania : adaptation to a changing climate

    Författare :Mathew Ogalo Silas; Martin Gullström; Hans W. Linderholm; Mattias Sköld; Patrick Polte; Christina Hicks; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Small-scale fisheries; tropical coastal seascape; nearshore-offshore linkages; coastal ecosystems; fish catch landings; communities; adaptation; climate change; fishing overfishing; Marine Ecotoxicology; marin ekotoxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : Coastal habitats like mangroves, seagrass meadows, coral reefs, and adjacent offshore waters constitute an important part of the tropical coastal seascape. They provide conducive environmental conditions for fish and other marine animals, which serve as food and income for coastal communities around the world. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Sea cages, seaweeds and seascapes : Causes and consequences of spatial links between aquaculture and ecosystems

    Författare :Nils Hedberg; Tedengren Michael; Nils Kautsky; Barry Costa-Pierce; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Spatial links; Aquaculture; Coral Reefs; Seagrass; Seascape; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Aquaculture is of growing importance in the global seafood production. The environmental impact of aquaculture will largely depend on the type of environment in which the aquaculture system is placed. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Macroalgae in tropical seascapes : regulating factors and functions in the coastal ecosystem

    Författare :Gustaf Lilliesköld Sjöö; Max Troell; Nils Kautsky; Lena Kautsky; Alina Szmant; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Macroalgae; Coral reefs; Nutrients; Herbivory; Ecological functions; East Africa; Regulating factors; Anthropogenic influence; Seaweed farming; Bioindicator; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Although macroalgae usually are inconspicuous on pristine coral reefs, they often thrive on reefs that are subjected to various types of anthropogenic disturbance. This thesis consists of five papers and investigates how biomass and composition of macroalgal communities on coral reefs are affected by regulating factors, such as nutrient availability, herbivory, substrate availability and hydrodynamic forces. 4. 9. Patterns of fish larvae and zooplankton distribution in mangrove-seagrass seascapes of East Africa

    Författare :Barnabas Alphonce Tarimo; Martin Gullström; Monika Winder; Mats Björk; Gunilla Rosenqvist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fish larvae; zooplankton; population dynamics; community structure; environmental variables; seasonal variation; habitat use; mangroves; seagrass meadows; seascape connectivity; Tanzania; western Indian Ocean; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Mangroves and seagrass meadows create coastal seascapes acting as breeding and nursery grounds for many fish species in tropical areas. Despite increased awareness on the role of these coastal habitats to fish, less knowledge is given to fish larvae distribution and population dynamics, limiting the understanding of major drivers of fish population dynamics and fisheries resources management, particularly in understudied regions such as the Western Indian Ocean. 5. 10. Effects of community- and government-managed marine protected areas on tropical seagrass and coral communities

    Författare :Angelica Chirico; Johan Eklöf; Nils Kautsky; Even Moland; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; coastal ecosystems; conservation; marine spatial planning; locally managed; fisheries closure; benthic communities; fish; foundation species; macroalgae; secondary succession; life-history; trait variability; plasticity; tourism; human disturbance; fishing; experimental research; Western Indian Ocean; causal modelling; structural equation model; permanova; multivariate data; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Tropical seagrass beds and coral reefs are among the most productive and diverse ecosystems on Earth and provide ecosystem services, such as fish production and coastal protection, and support livelihoods of millions of people. At the same time, these ecosystems are threatened globally by anthropogenic disturbances, such as overfishing, pollution and global warming. LÄS MER
