6. Patterns of small-scale coastal fisheries and local fisheries management in Tanzania : adaptation to a changing climate
Sammanfattning : Coastal habitats like mangroves, seagrass meadows, coral reefs, and adjacent offshore waters constitute an important part of the tropical coastal seascape. They provide conducive environmental conditions for fish and other marine animals, which serve as food and income for coastal communities around the world. LÄS MER
7. Sea cages, seaweeds and seascapes : Causes and consequences of spatial links between aquaculture and ecosystems
Sammanfattning : Aquaculture is of growing importance in the global seafood production. The environmental impact of aquaculture will largely depend on the type of environment in which the aquaculture system is placed. LÄS MER
8. Macroalgae in tropical seascapes : regulating factors and functions in the coastal ecosystem
Sammanfattning : Although macroalgae usually are inconspicuous on pristine coral reefs, they often thrive on reefs that are subjected to various types of anthropogenic disturbance. This thesis consists of five papers and investigates how biomass and composition of macroalgal communities on coral reefs are affected by regulating factors, such as nutrient availability, herbivory, substrate availability and hydrodynamic forces. 9. Patterns of fish larvae and zooplankton distribution in mangrove-seagrass seascapes of East Africa
Sammanfattning : Mangroves and seagrass meadows create coastal seascapes acting as breeding and nursery grounds for many fish species in tropical areas. Despite increased awareness on the role of these coastal habitats to fish, less knowledge is given to fish larvae distribution and population dynamics, limiting the understanding of major drivers of fish population dynamics and fisheries resources management, particularly in understudied regions such as the Western Indian Ocean. 10. Effects of community- and government-managed marine protected areas on tropical seagrass and coral communities
Sammanfattning : Tropical seagrass beds and coral reefs are among the most productive and diverse ecosystems on Earth and provide ecosystem services, such as fish production and coastal protection, and support livelihoods of millions of people. At the same time, these ecosystems are threatened globally by anthropogenic disturbances, such as overfishing, pollution and global warming. LÄS MER
