1. Genetic connectivity of fish in the Western Indian Ocean
Sammanfattning : An almost unbroken fringing reef runs along the east coast of Africa, the lagoon inside the reef is the foundation of almost all artisanal fisheries. It is a low-tech fishery conducted by many people. Some areas can have up to 19 fishermen per square kilometer. LÄS MER
2. Managing sea cucumber fisheries and aquaculture : Studies of social-ecological systems in the Western Indian Ocean
Sammanfattning : Collecting sea cucumbers to supply the high value Chinese dried seafood market is a livelihood activity available to many people in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO), making it an important part of local economies. These fisheries are generally not successfully managed and tropical sea cucumber fisheries show continuing signs of decline. LÄS MER
3. Towards Technology Assessment of Ocean Energy in a Developing Country Context
Sammanfattning : New technologies for the extraction of valuable ocean resources are emerging: renewable ocean energy. Ocean energy technologies have so far primarily been developed in industrialized countries but will be deployed in both industrialized and developing countries. LÄS MER
4. Genetic variability and nitrogenase activity of cyanobacterial communities associated with tropical seagrass meadows (western Indian Ocean)
Sammanfattning : Tropical seagrass ecosystems are highly productive and important for sustaining marine life and associated coastal societies. In this study, the diversity and role of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria associated with five common seagrass genera in coastal regions of the western Indian Ocean (WIO; Tanzania) were examined, as well as the impact of anthropogenic activities. 5. Systematics and Biogeography of Western Indian Ocean Region Rubiaceae : examples from Danaideae, Hymenodictyeae, and Naucleeae
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the systematics and biogeography of the tribes Danaideae, Hymenodictyeae, and Naucleeae in the angiosperm family Rubiaceae (coffee family), with a special interest in the Western Indian Ocean region (WIOR). The levels of endemism in the WIOR are remarkably high and Madagascar is the largest island surrounded by three main archipelagos with islands of various age and size. LÄS MER
