11. Arsenic-induced protein aggregation and toxicity in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Sammanfattning : Arsenic is prevalent in the environment and this toxic metalloid poses a substantial threat to human health with 100-200 million people worldwide estimated to be at risk. Chronic exposure to arsenic is associated with neurodegenerative and age-related disorders that are characterized by the accumulation of protein aggregates, including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. 12. Neurotoxic Effects of Dichlorophenyl Methylsulphones Related to Olfactory Mucosal Lesions
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the highly potent olfactory mucosa toxicant 2,6-dichlorophenyl methylsulphone (2,6-diClPh-MeSO2) and its non-toxic 2,5-chlorinated isomer (2,5-diClPh-MeSO2). In mice, both substances bind firmly in the olfactory mucosa and the olfactory bulb, which are important components of the sensory system. LÄS MER
13. Metal homeostasis as critical determinant for cellular fitness
Sammanfattning : Metals play a crucial role in cellular biology. Bulk and trace metals such as calcium and manganese regulate a plethora of cellular processes ranging from signaling and oxidative stress to proteostasis and energy metabolism. LÄS MER
14. The Xenopus tropicalis model for developmental endocrine and reproductive toxicity : Histological and molecular endpoints for disrupted spermatogenesis
Sammanfattning : Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are linked to adverse effects in both humans and wildlife. There are however, large knowledge gaps regarding cause-effect and dose-response relationships between the interference with endocrine pathways and adverse effects in the organism, especially at puberty and in subsequent generations. 15. Toxicity of metal containing micro- and nanoparticles : studies from an inhalation perspective
Sammanfattning : Particles in urban environments have for a long time been associated with different health problems and diseases, such as worsening of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as well as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. In addition, metal containing particles present in occupational settings and industries, particularly particles produced during welding, have been linked to several adverse health effects. LÄS MER
