6. Nitric oxide production by the intestinal mucosa during hypoperfusion
Sammanfattning : The present thesis is based on the concept that gastrointestinal blood hypoperfusion is a common phenomenon associated with critical illness. Furthermore, the development of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is proposed to be initiated by gastrointestinal mucosal barrier dysfunction, allowing intestinal luminal contents to penetrate into the tissue and activate a systemic inflammatory response. 7. Secundum atrial septal defect in the adult. Clinical, haemodynamic and electrophysiological aspects
Sammanfattning : Atrial septal defect (ASD) is the most common congenital heart malformation diagnosed in adult life. In this thesis important clinical, haemodynamic and electrophysiological aspects of ASD in the adult are explored. LÄS MER
8. Polymer-shelled Ultrasound Contrast Agents : Characterization and Application
Sammanfattning : Ultrasound-based imaging technique is probably the most used approach for rapid investigationand monitoring of anatomical and physiological conditions of internal organs and tissues.Ultrasound-based techniques do not require the use of ionizing radiation making the tests anexceptionally safe and painless. 9. Metabolic risk markers and relative survival in patients with aortic stenosis requiring surgery
Sammanfattning : Background: Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most common valve disorder requiring surgery in developed countries. The etiology of AS is only partly known. Identification of new biomarkers in prospective studies could lead to novel insights in the etiology of AS, and possibly lead to improved clinical management. LÄS MER
10. Salt-inducible kinase 1 : a novel regulator within a cell sodium-sensing network
Sammanfattning : Na+, K+-ATPase (NK) is expressed in all animal cells and plays a crucial role in cellular ion homeostasis. The NK activity is tightly regulated by specific signaling networks that must be well controlled in time and space (at the plasma membrane or in the intracellular compartments) to guarantee the specificity of the physiological response.
