1. Nitric oxide production by the intestinal mucosa during hypoperfusion
Sammanfattning : The present thesis is based on the concept that gastrointestinal blood hypoperfusion is a common phenomenon associated with critical illness. Furthermore, the development of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is proposed to be initiated by gastrointestinal mucosal barrier dysfunction, allowing intestinal luminal contents to penetrate into the tissue and activate a systemic inflammatory response. 2. Aspects of hepatoduodenal trauma and fluid therapy in hemorrhagic shock
Sammanfattning : Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death among young adults and children, accounting for 5 million deaths worldwide on an annual basis. In Sweden alone, 2500 individuals succumb to traumatic injuries yearly. Beyond the burden of death, injuries contribute to a large proportion of disability. LÄS MER
3. Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Inferior Vena Cava (REBOVC) : Experimental and clinical studies
Sammanfattning : Juxtahepatic venous injuries often cause life-threatening hemorrhagic shock, the mortality is high and new management methods are needed. The aims were to explore endovascular methods for retrohepatic vascu-lar isolation, their effects on survival, hemodynamics, metabolism, end-organ damage and bleeding, and if ultrasound and anatomical land-marks could be used to guide placement of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the inferior vena cava (REBOVC). 4. Characterization of dengue virus isolates from patients experiencing dengue fever, dengue hemorrhagic fever, and dengue shock syndrome
Sammanfattning : The four serotypes of dengue virus (DENV) belong to the genus flavivirus, and have a positive sense, single-stranded RNA genome of ~11 kb. The DENVs cause the most common arthropod-borne viral disease in man with ~100 million infections per year. The sole measure of control is limiting the mosquito vectors Aedes aegypti and Ae. LÄS MER
5. Intravasal microdialysis as a novel technique to monitor metabolism in myocardial ischemia and critical illness
Sammanfattning : Rapid detection of post-operative myocardial ischemia is of great value in the treatment of patients undergoing cardiac surgery. With the methods readily available in modem thoracic intensive care units post-operative myocardial ischemia is difficult to detect, and the risk of myocardial ischemia and other complications after cardiac surgery is particularly high in patients with concurrent co-morbidity.
