6. Methods for Determination of Benzo(a)pyrene and High Molecular Weight (>300 Da) Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Particulate Matter from Ambient Air and Vehicle Exhausts
Sammanfattning : Air pollution with particulate matter (PM) raises considerable concern because of its adverse effects on human health. For this reason, and because the mechanisms of PM toxicity are not fully known, there is an urgent need to determine the chemical constituents of atmospheric PM, especially PM emanating from traffic - a major source of urban PM. 7. The effect on chromosomal stability of some dietary constituents
Sammanfattning : When food is heated, a vast number of compounds are formed. Some of these are known to be toxic. Among these are furan, HMF, PhIP, IQ, and MeIQx, the subjects of this thesis. All these compounds are known or suspected carcinogens but the detailed mechanisms behind their carcinogenicity have not yet been fully examined. LÄS MER
8. Hemoglobin dosimetry and comparative toxicity of acrylamide and its metabolic glycidamide
Sammanfattning : Hemoglobin is a useful in vivo dosimeter for electrophilic compounds that react with nucleophilic sites in macromolecules and form covalently bound adducts. With the purpose of increasing the sensitivity of analysis of haemoglobin adducts, a method was developed for enriching adducted globin chains based on ion-exchange chromatography. LÄS MER
9. Environmental Contaminants, Recombination and Cancer : Investigations on the molecular mechanisms of spontaneous and induced recombination in the hprt gene of Chinese hamster cells
Sammanfattning : Recombination results in rearrangement of the genetic material contained in the chromosomes inherited from the mother and father and this process is also involved in repairing damage to the genome. Occasionally, the machinery that performs recombination malfunctions and this may lead to illegitimate recombination events which inactivate tumor suppressor genes or activate protooncogenes. LÄS MER
10. In vivo dosimetry of some important industrial chemicals by measurement of their reaction products with hemoglobin
Sammanfattning : Hemoglobin adduct measurements provide a useful tool for the development of models for risk assessment of chemicals. The measurements can be used to identify reactive metabolites and to determine the in vivo doses of these metabolites. LÄS MER
