1. Biodegradable Surfactants Containing Hydrolyzable Bonds
Sammanfattning : Surfactants with built-in weak bonds, so-called cleavable surfactants, are interesting candidates in the search for more environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional surfactants. The objective of this thesis was to perform a systematic study in which cleavable surfactants with different hydrolyzable bonds were compared with regard to physicochemical properties, and chemical and biological stability. 2. Biochemical conversion of biomass to biofuels : pretreatment–detoxification–hydrolysis–fermentation
Sammanfattning : The use of lignocellulosic materials to replace fossil resources for the industrial production of fuels, chemicals, and materials is increasing. The carbohydrate composition of lignocellulose (i.e. cellulose and hemicellulose) is an abundant source of sugars. LÄS MER
3. Alkaline Sphingomyelinase; A Potential Inhibitor in Colorectal Carcinogenesis
Sammanfattning : Sphingomyelin (SM) is present both in eucaryotic cells and the diet. Sphingomyelinase (SMase) hydrolyses SM and generates ceramide that has been implicated in the regulation of cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis. Previously a SMase with alkaline pH optimum was identified in the intestinal tract. LÄS MER
4. A thermostable alkaline protease from a new alkaliphilic Nesterenkonia sp
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns a novel alkaline protease produced by an extremophilic microbial specie, designated as AL20, isolated from a feather sample collected at the shore of the alkaline soda lake Abjata in the Ethiopian Rift Valley. The isolate is a heterotrophic, alkaliphilic, halotolerant gram-positive, strictly aerobic, non-motile, non-spore forming bacterium. LÄS MER
5. Targeting RNA by the Antisense Approach and a Close Look at RNA Cleavage Reaction
Sammanfattning : This thesis summarizes the results of studies on two aspects of nucleic acids. Chemically modified antisense oligonucleotides (AONs) have been evaluated with regards to their suitability for mRNA targeting in an antisense approach (Paper I – III). LÄS MER
