1. Waterborne sediment and pollutant transport into lakes and accumulation in lake sediments
Sammanfattning : The general objective of this thesis is to contribute to the knowledge of the transport of sediments and pollutants from catchments to downstream water recipient systems and their accumulation in these systems, such as lakes and lake sediments. One part of the thesis studies the importance of drainage reach morphology and water flow for the phosphorous (P) transport and retention in the reaches, and the main controlling processes of the P retention in the reach sediments. 2. A Deep Dive into Sediments : Exploring approaches to assess environmental risks and achieving environmental goals in management of contaminated sediments in Sweden
Sammanfattning : Contaminated sediments are common, especially near urban and industrialized areas, and they can have negative ecological effects. In three studies, I explore the challenges for environmental management of contaminated sediments, focusing on environmental risk assessment (ERA) in Sweden. LÄS MER
3. Predictive Modeling of Lake Eutrophication
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents predictive models for important variables concerning eutrophication effects in lakes. The keystone is a dynamic phosphorus model based on ordinary differential equations. LÄS MER
4. Accumulation and Composition of Gully Pot Sediments under Varying Anthropogenic Activities
Sammanfattning : Gully pots (GPs) are an integral urban drainage component, contributing to conveying runoff from urban surfaces and reducing the load of solids and associated contaminants entering downstream piped systems and receiving waters. Over time, the silting-up of GPs impairs their hydraulic performance, increasing the risk of GP blockage-induced flood events and reducing solids retention performance. LÄS MER
5. Free-Vehicle Benthic Lander Technology for the Study of Biogeochemical Processes in Marine Sediments
Sammanfattning : Various sediment sampling and incubation techniques were used to characterize benthic biogeochemical processes important for an improved understanding of the oceanic carbon cycle. Recent flux data from the Arctic Siberian shelf are revealing differences (often by a factor of ten) between areas affected by the big Russian river outlets (high fluxes) and areas with low influence from land (low fluxes).
