1. Characterisation of social behaviour in red junglefowl and White leghorn laying hens : phenotypic and genetic studies
Sammanfattning : The objective of this thesis was, by using two model strains of chicken, red junglefowl and White Leghorn layer, to study differences in social behaviour of the species that could be derived from domestication and production related selection processes. The social phenotype characterisation was done to be able to further study the association of the social differences to specific production related traits as well as to certain genome areas in intercross and backcross lines generated from these two parental populations. 2. Exploring the Realm of Gene Expression Differences Between White Leghorn and Red Junglefowl Chickens
Sammanfattning : In this thesis we attempted to elicit patterns of gene expression that influence phenotype, and that may also have been altered by thousands of years of domestication and selection, between red junglefowl and White Leghorn chickens. Red junglefowl are the wild ancestor to all domesticated chickens, and poultry in general are highly valued as a research animal and food resource. LÄS MER
3. Genomics of heterosis and egg production in White Leghorns
Sammanfattning : Crossbreeding is practiced extensively in commercial breeding programs of many plant and animal species, in order to exploit heterosis, breed complementarity, and to protect pure line genetic material. The success of commercial crossbreeding schemes depends on identifying and using the right combination of breeds, lines or varieties that produce the desired crossbred offspring. LÄS MER
4. Mapping Genes Affecting Phenotypic Traits in Chicken
Sammanfattning : The purpose of gene mapping is to understand the underlying genetics of simple and complex traits like plumage colour and growth. This thesis is based on a cross between the wild ancestor of the modern chicken, the red junglefowl, and a White Leghorn line selected for high egg mass. LÄS MER
5. Effects of domestication related genes on behaviour, physiology and gene expression in chickens
Sammanfattning : Domestication, the process when animals adapt to captivity, tends to modify a whole array of traits towards what has been termed “the domesticated phenotype”, where the domesticated animal differs from its wild ancestor in morphology, physiology, development and behaviour. Physiological traits and behaviours are controlled by genes. LÄS MER
