22. On Sahelian-Sudan rainfall and its moisture sources
Sammanfattning : The African Sahel is one of the most vulnerable regions to climate variability at different time scales. It is an arid to semi-arid region with limited water resources. The summer rainfall is one of these sources, but it exhibits pronounced interannual variability. This thesis presents several aspects of Sahelian Sudan rainfall. LÄS MER
23. Introduced and indigenous macroalgae : Ecological effects, functions and regulating factors in tropical seascapes
Sammanfattning : Tropical marine shallow-water areas are highly productive systems that promote important ecological functions and biodiversity. Stressors on these systems are intensifying due to increasing anthropogenic disturbances on multiple scales. LÄS MER
24. Drivers of carbon sink function in tropical seagrass beds : influence of carbon import, plant composition, seascape configuration and human activities
Sammanfattning : Seagrass meadows are effective carbon sinks, sequestering atmospheric CO2 and capturing allochthonous organic material, storing organic carbon (Corg) in their sediments, so called Blue Carbon. In tropical areas, seagrass meadows have a high number of calcareous organisms, which can offset carbon sequestration by releasing CO2 through their calcification. LÄS MER
25. Geological development of the East African coastal basin of Tanzania
Sammanfattning : The East African coastal basin of Tanzania, which is characterised by an extensional tectonic style, is located along the passive continental margin of the western Indian Ocean. The present study is concerned with the Mafia Island and the Mafia Channel which together form a subbasin within the north-south elongated coastal sedimentary basin of Tanzania. LÄS MER
