36. Human Papilloma Virus, Epstein-Barr Virus, and Herpes Simplex Virus Type-1 in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinomas from Three Populations
Sammanfattning : Most oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is believed to develop via a multistep process of cumulative gene damage in epithelial cells. Increasing incidence of OSCC and evidence that traditional risk factors may not be responsible directed us to investigate the prevalence of virus in pre- and malignant samples. LÄS MER
37. Person-centred, nurse-led follow-up programme after surgical treatment for intermittent claudication
Sammanfattning : Intermittent Claudication (IC) is a common symptom of peripheral arterial disease with a prevalence of 5-10% among people 70 years of age or older. The symptoms of IC are discomfort or pain in the lower extremities, which is induced by exercise and relieved by short rest. LÄS MER
38. Influence of genetic polymorphisms on DNA repair, p53 mutations and cancer risk
Sammanfattning : Individuals have different susceptibility towards environmental exposures that may cause or contribute to disease. This inter-individual variation is partly due to genetic polymorphisms in genes involved in DNA repair and metabolism, which have potential to modulate the function of the encoded proteins. LÄS MER
39. The role of monocytes in chronic inflammatory diseases
Sammanfattning : Monocytes and monocyte-derived cells are important players in the orchestration of inflammatory reactions in blood and peripheral tissues. However, little is known about the monocyte fate upon entry into human tissues, and current concepts are mainly based on animal models, with the addition of observational studies in humans that often do not allow determining causality. 40. Cardiovascular dysfunction in obstructive sleep apnea
Sammanfattning : This thesis addresses relationships between the presence or severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and blood pressure (BP) as well as other signs of cardiovascular dysfunction. In a cross-sectional investigation of a sleep laboratory cohort of 81 patients, a dose response relationship was observed between the number of apneas plus hypopneas per hour of sleep (apnea-hypopnea index, AHI; measured with polysomnography) and office systolic and diastolic BP (SBP and DBP), daytime ambulatory DBP as well as nighttime ambulatory SBP and DBP (all ambulatory measurements taken at 20-minute intervals).
