21. Gene Therapy for Neurological Disorders
Sammanfattning : Gene therapy is an attractive strategy for neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy, for several reasons. Introduction of genes with a therapeutic potential can be achieved locally, by accurate injections in the compromised tissue, and release of a transgene therapeutic substance can be regulated by the surrounding host neural circuitry. 22. Effects of surface plasmons in subwavelength metallic structures
Sammanfattning : The study of optical phenomena related to the strong electromagnetic response of noble metals (silver (Ag) and gold (Au) being most popular) over the last couple of decades has led to the emergence of a fast growing research area called plasmonics named after 'surface plasmons' which are electron density waves that propagate along the interface of a metal and a dielectric medium. Surface plasmons are formed by the coupling of light to the electrons on the metal surface subject to the fulfillment of certain physical conditions and they are bound to the metal surface. LÄS MER
23. Plasmonics with a Twist
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the exploration of interactions between circularly polarized light and plasmonic nanostructures, and nanoparticles. Polarization is an integral part of light and has a wealth of applications in the modern world. LÄS MER
24. Overstretching short DNA – Single-molecule force spectroscopy studies
Sammanfattning : Structural deformation of DNA has a central role in many biological processes. It occurs, for example, during replication, transcription, and regulation of the activity of the genome. To understand these fundamental processes it is necessary to have a detailed knowledge of the mechanical properties of DNA. LÄS MER
25. Application of DOAS for Studies of Evolving Volcanic Activity in Central America
Sammanfattning : Volcanic gas emissions play a critical role in understanding the physical processes that drive eruptive activity. Combining gas measurements with other geophysical parameters provides a more accurate description of the changes that occur beneath a volcano. LÄS MER
