  1. 11. Evaluation of microbial health risks associated with the reuse of source-separated humna urine

    Författare :Caroline Höglund; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :urine-separation; urine; wastewater systems; wastewater reuse; recycling; enteric pathogens; faecal sterols; indicator bacteria; hygiene risks; microbial persistence; microbial risk assessment; QMRA; fertiliser; crop;

    Sammanfattning : Human excreta contain plant nutrients and have the potentialto be used as a fertiliser in agriculture. Urine contributesthe major proportion of the nutrients (N, P and K) in domesticwastewater whereas faeces contribute a smaller amount andinvolves greater health risks if reused due to the possiblepresence of enteric pathogens. 2. 12. Environmental sanitation situation and solute transport in variably saturated soil in peri-urban Kampala

    Författare :Robinah Kulabako; Roger Thunvik; Felix Mtalo; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Environmental Sanitation; Kampala; Modelling; Phosphorus transport; Shallow groundwater; Peri-urban; Vadose zone; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Sammanfattning : The environmental sanitation situation in Kampala’s peri-urban areas was reviewed and investigated through field studies, structured interviews with personnel from key institutions and administration of questionnaires to households in a selected peri-urban settlement (Bwaise III Parish).  In this settlement, specific field and laboratory measurements were undertaken so as to create a better understanding of the environmental sanitation situation, anthropogenic pollution loads and their transport and impact (with a focus on Phosphorus) in Kampala’s Peri-urban areas in pursuit of interventions for improving the environmental sanitation and protecting the shallow groundwater resource there. 3. 13. Biogeochemistry in Subarctic birch forests : Perspectives on insect herbivory

    Författare :Jeppe Ågård Kristensen; MERGE: ModElling the Regional and Global Earth system; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biogeochemistry; Aboveground-belowground interactions; Herbivory; Insects; Subarctic; Birch; soil microbes;

    Sammanfattning : Herbivory can influence ecosystem processes, partly through long-term changes of the plant community compositions, but also more rapidly through the herbivores’ digestive alteration of the organic matter that is cycled through the soil and back to the primary producers. In the Subarctic mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Puumala hantavirus : immune responses and vaccines

    Författare :Cristina de Carvalho Nicacio; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Hantavirus; Puumala virus; nucleocapsid protein; neutralizing antibodies; Fab fragment; combinatorial library; phage-display; IgA; cellular immunity; cross-protection; intranasal vaccination;

    Sammanfattning : Hantaviruses (family Bunyaviridae) is a group of closely related zoonotic rodent-borne viruses that are transmitted to humans through inhalation of infected rodent excreta. They cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) or hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) with varying degree of severity depending on the causative virus. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Hantaviruses : animal models, immunology and pathogenesis

    Författare :Jonas Klingström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Hantavirus; animal models; vaccine; passive immunization; nitric oxide;

    Sammanfattning : Hantaviruses cause two serious and often fatal human zoonotic diseases: hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Eurasia, and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in the Americas. Hantaviruses are rodent-borne and are transmitted to humans via inhalation of contaminated rodent excreta. LÄS MER
