1. Genital tract CD4+ T cells for vaccination and protection against Chlamydia trachomatis
Sammanfattning : Vaccination strategies for protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are lacking due to an incomplete understanding of genital tract T cell responses. This thesis dissects the generation of T helper subsets, including the recently discovered Th17 subset, during genital tract infection with a common sexually transmitted pathogen, Chlamydia trachomatis, and addresses vaccine requirements for the generation of genital tract CD4+ T cell immunity. 2. PROTEIN VACCINE AGAINST NEONATAL GROUP B STREPTOCOCCAL INFECTION Immunization experiments in animals and a serological study in humans
Sammanfattning : Infection with group B streptococcus (GBS), an encapsulated bacterium, is an important cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Capsular polysaccharides and cell surface proteins of GBS are candidate antigens for development of a human GBS vaccine. Proteins have many advantages as vaccine antigens. LÄS MER
3. B-cell responses after pertussis vaccination
Sammanfattning : Despite years of vaccination efforts, whooping cough, or pertussis, is not under control. Although immunization has greatly reduced the disease incidence, thousands of children die of whooping cough each year. LÄS MER
4. Broadly protective nanoparticle-based mucosal vaccine against influenza virus infection
Sammanfattning : Influenza is one of the major viral diseases affecting humans and it is responsible for three to five million cases of severe illness and about 250.000 to 500.000 deaths each year worldwide. LÄS MER
5. Puumala hantavirus : immune responses and vaccines
Sammanfattning : Hantaviruses (family Bunyaviridae) is a group of closely related zoonotic rodent-borne viruses that are transmitted to humans through inhalation of infected rodent excreta. They cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) or hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) with varying degree of severity depending on the causative virus. LÄS MER
