  1. 31. Unravelling Sustainability : The complex dynamics of emergent environmental governance and management systems at multiple scales

    Författare :Lucas Dawson; Ingrid Stjernquist; Marine Elbakidze; Raimonds Ernsteins; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Integrated adaptive environmental governance and management; Social-ecological system dynamics; Complex systems; Sustainability transitions; Sustainability strategies; Multi-level governance; Causal loop diagrams; Green Infrastructure; Landscape restoration; Habitat restoration; Biodiversity conservation; Comprehensive planning; Stakeholder participation; System thinking; Water Framework Directive; Sustainable water governance; Collaborative learning; Communities of practice; Knowledge management; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis adopts a complex systems approach to investigate the dynamic emergence of sustainable environmental governance and management systems in multiple contexts in Europe. Accelerating rates of environmental degradation across the world have called the legitimacy of previous environmental governance and management arrangements into question. LÄS MER

  2. 32. Seismological Investigation of Katla Volcanic System (Iceland) : 3D Velocity Structure and Overall Seismicity Pattern

    Författare :Zeinab Jeddi; Ari Tryggvason; Olafur Gudmundsson; Heidi Soosalu; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Volcano tomography; volcano seismicity; Katla volcano; Earthquake location; Geofysik med inriktning mot seismologi; Geophysics with specialization in Seismology;

    Sammanfattning : The work in this thesis concentrates on Katla volcano in southern Iceland. This is one of Europe’s most active volcanoes and its history tells us that it poses many threats to society, both locally (Iceland) and on a broader scale (Europe). LÄS MER

  3. 33. Asymptotic methods applied to some oceanography-related problems

    Författare :Moundheur Zarroug; Jonas Nycander; Kristofer Döös; Jan Erik Weber; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Asymptotic analysis; internal waves; geophysical fluid dynamics; thermal oscillator; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Oceanography; Oceanografi; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis a number of issues related to oceanographic problems have been dealt with on the basis of applying asymptotic methods.  The first study focused on the tidal generation of internal waves, a process which is quantifed by the conversion rates. These have traditionally been calculated by using the WKB approximation. LÄS MER

  4. 34. The Role of Vegetation-Climate Feedbacks in Regional Earth System Dynamics

    Författare :Anna Wramneby; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The hypothesis of this thesis is that climate models should take structural vegetation changes that operate on interannual to centennial time scales into account in order to simulate climate change in a more realistic manner. To evaluate this hypothesis, a regional Earth System Model (ESM) has been developed, validated and applied over Europe. LÄS MER

  5. 35. Entering the dynamic risk space : Assessing planetary boundary interactions through process-based quantifications

    Författare :Arne Tobian; Johan Rockström; Sarah Cornell; Ingo Fetzer; Dieter Gerten; Martin Volk; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Planetary boundaries; climate change; land-use change; Earth system interactions; ecosystem modeling; green water; vetenskap om hållbar utveckling; Sustainability Science;

    Sammanfattning : The planetary boundaries framework is an effort to define a safe operating space for humanity. Its rationale is that sustainable development needs to be achieved in ways that safeguard the stability of the Earth system on which human prosperity relies. LÄS MER
