16. DNA checkpoint override and redox signaling in Schizosaccharomyces pombe
Sammanfattning : This thesis covers intracellular stress signaling through genotoxic stress, overriding of checkpoint control, as well as cellular redox status in hypoxic and oxidative stress Papers I and II: Caffeine has been shown to override cell cycle checkpoints in humans as well as in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Understanding of the mechanism may aid in the development of compounds with similar overriding mechanisms for sensitization in cancer therapy. LÄS MER
17. Population size and genetic diversity of Nigerian lions (Panthera leo)
Sammanfattning : High growth rate in human populations, agricultural developments and industrialization have impinged negatively on the natural habitats of most large carnivores, causing fragmentation, isolation and consequently reduction in population size. Lions (Panthera leo) that once roamed most parts of Southern Europe, Asia, the Middle East, North America, northern part of South America and most parts of Africa are today found only in parts of sub-Saharan Africa and at a single site in India. 18. Genetic organization of encapsulated and non-encapsulated Haemophilus influenzae strains. Analysis of the glpTQ and 23S rRNA operons
Sammanfattning : Encapsulated Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) and non-encapsulated H. influenzae (NTHi) are important pathogens causing invasive and mucosal infections in children. A 42 kDa surface-exposed lipoprotein, protein D, has been found to be a potential virulence factor of NTHi. LÄS MER
19. Population Genetic Analyses of Natal Dispersal and Substructure in Three Bird Species
Sammanfattning : Genetic variation within and among populations is a result of past and ongoing processes. Among the most important of such processes are dispersal, habitat fragmentation and selection. This thesis use neutral genetic variation as a tool to investigate these processes in three bird species. LÄS MER
20. On the mechanisms and consequences of cell to cell DNA transfer
Sammanfattning : Development of cancer is a multistep process where an accumulation of genetic alterations drives normal cells to malignancy. In most cancer cells genetic changes can be observed both at the level of point mutations and as gains and losses of chromosomes. LÄS MER
