  1. 1. The Use of Laboratory Analyses in Sweden : Quality and Cost-Effectiveness in Test Utilization

    Författare :Mirja Mindemark; Anders Larsson; Lars-Olof Hansson; Per Simonsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; continuing medical education; cost control; cost savings; physician practice patterns; diagnostic tests; clinical chemistry; primary health care; health care costs; laboratory management; test utilization; trends; cost-effectiveness; inflammatory bowel disease; irritable bowel syndrome; calprotectin; cost avoidance; Clinical chemistry; Klinisk kemi; Biomedical Laboratory Science; Biomedicinsk laboratorievetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Laboratory analyses, essential in screening, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disease, are indispensable in health care, but appropriate utilization is intricate. The overall aim of this thesis was to study the use of laboratory tests in Sweden with the objective to evaluate and optimize test utilization. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Sources of preanalytical error in primary health care : implications for patient safety

    Författare :Johan Söderberg; Christine Brulin; Ewa Idvall; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; blood specimen collection; haemolysis; medical errors; phlebotomy; preanalytical; primary health care; quality indicators; quality of health care; questionnaires; specimen handling; Clinical chemistry; Klinisk kemi; medicin; Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : Background Venous blood tests constitute an important part in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. However, test results are often viewed as objective values rather than the end result of a complex process. This has clinical importance since most errors arise before the sample reaches the laboratory. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Preanalytical errors in hospitals : implications for quality improvement of blood sample collection

    Författare :Olof Wallin; Christine Brulin; Kjell Grankvist; Johan Hultdin; Bethany van Guelpen; Ania Willman; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; medical errors; preanalytical; quality improvement; questionnaire; venous blood sampling; Clinical chemistry; Klinisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Most errors in the venous blood testing process are preanalytical, i.e. they occur before the sample reaches the laboratory. Unlike the laboratory analysis, the preanalytical phase involves several error-prone manual tasks not easily avoided with technological solutions. LÄS MER

  4. 4. The relation of allergy to otitis media with effusion : Clinical and histochemical studies

    Författare :David S. Hurst; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; Allergy; eosinophil cationic protein; otitis media with effusion; skin testing; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Otitis media with effusion (OME) is the major form of chronic relapsing inflammatory disease of the middle ear, constitutes the most common diagnosis for chldren under 15 years old and is the major cause of auditory dysfunction in pre-school children. The aim of these studies was to determine the role of allergy in the pathogenesis of middle ear effusion that persists longer than 2 months. LÄS MER

  5. 5. The role of computer-aided design and surface chemistry on Cell-scaffold interactions

    Författare :Sun Yang; Anna Finne-Wistrand; Ann-Christine Albertsson; Jinshan Pan; My Hedhammar; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; amorphous degradable copolymer; aliphatic polyester; 3D fiber deposition; computer-aided design; Tween 80; BMSC; hOB; porous scaffolds;

    Sammanfattning : Cell interactions and cell response to three dimensional scaffolds based on poly(L-lactide-co-1,5-dioxepan-2-one) [poly(LLA-co-DXO)] and poly(L-lactide-co-e-caprolactone) [poly(LLA-co-CL)] wereimprovedstudiedby increasing surface hydrophilicity and by using computer-aided scaffold design. Different amounts of Tween 80 (3, 10, 20 wt%) were mixed with the copolymer and it was found that the water contact angle decreased significantly with the amount of Tween 80. LÄS MER
