  1. 1. Homocysteine in cardiovascular disease with special reference to longitudinal changes

    Författare :Johan Hultdin; Torbjörn Nilsson; Bertil Kågedal; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; homocysteine; methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase MTHFR ; first-ever stroke; first-ever myocardial infarction; longitudinal; prospective; risk factor; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Abnormalities in homocysteine metabolism have been suggested as risk factors for stroke and myocardial infarction. In retrospective studies, elevated levels of total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) and/or methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) 677C>T polymorphism have indicated an increase in risk. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Environmental risk factors for the occurrence of multiple sclerosis

    Författare :Martin Biström; Peter Sundström; Johan Hultdin; Jonatan Salzer; Kjell-Morten Myhr; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Multiple sclerosis; risk factors; epidemiology; case-control study; Human herpesvirus 6A; Human herpesvirus 6B; leptin; insulin; Epstein-Barr virus; vitamin D; Neurology; neurologi;

    Sammanfattning : Background. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory and degenerative disease of the central nervous system that typically debuts around age 30. About 2.3 million people are affected in the world today, and besides trauma it is the most common cause of neurological disability among young adults in the western world. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Oxidants and antioxidants in cardiovascular disease

    Författare :Kim Ekblom; Johan Hultdin; Stefan L Marklund; Lars Breimer; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; first-ever acute myocardial infarction; first-ever stroke; bilirubin; iron; HFE genotypes; UGT1A1*28; prospective; risk factor; Cardiovascular medicine; Kardiovaskulär medicin; Epidemiology; Epidemiologi; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Background Cardiovascular diseases, including myocardial infarction and stroke, are the main reason of death in Sweden and Western Europe. High iron stores are believed to produce oxygen radicals, which is the presumed putative mechanism behind lipid peroxidation, atherosclerosis and subsequent cardiovascular disease. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Nutritional aspects of behaviour and biology during pregnancy and postpartum

    Författare :Anette Lundqvist; Herbert Sandström; Katarina Hamberg; Torbjörn Bäckström; Johan Hultdin; Margareta Larsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pregnancy; antenatal care; dietary advice; qualitative; dietary intake; cross-sectional; vitamin D levels; alloprenanolone; weight gain; longitudinal; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : BackgroundA well-balanced nutritious diet is important for the pregnant woman and the growing fetus, as well as for their future health. Poor nutrition results from both over-consumption of energy-rich foods which can lead to a higher weight gain than is healthy and under-nutrition of essential nutrients. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Homocysteine and its determinants in relation to cardiovascular risk factors and myocardial infarction

    Författare :Elisabet Söderström; Johan Hultdin; Torbjörn K. Nilsson; Anders Larsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Homocysteine; folate; myocardial infarction; apolipoprotein; risk factors; cotinine; nicotine; tobacco; CTH; MTHFR; renal insufficiency; glomerular filtration rate; creatinine; cystatin C; shrunken pore syndrome; epidemiology; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Globally, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke, are the leading cause of illness and death and constitute a significant part of the disease burden in Sweden and Western Europe. Age, hypertension, smoking, obesity, dyslipoproteinemia, diabetes, and impaired renal function are considered established risk factors for CVD. LÄS MER
