1. Hybrid fiber preform fabrication using CO laser heating
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the development of a new prototyping technique for specialty optical fibers and covers all the fabrication steps from preform to fiber. The technique allows to produce fibers of a custom core structure and material composition, mainly focusing on semiconductor core fibers. LÄS MER
2. The role of computer-aided design and surface chemistry on Cell-scaffold interactions
Sammanfattning : Cell interactions and cell response to three dimensional scaffolds based on poly(L-lactide-co-1,5-dioxepan-2-one) [poly(LLA-co-DXO)] and poly(L-lactide-co-e-caprolactone) [poly(LLA-co-CL)] wereimprovedstudiedby increasing surface hydrophilicity and by using computer-aided scaffold design. Different amounts of Tween 80 (3, 10, 20 wt%) were mixed with the copolymer and it was found that the water contact angle decreased significantly with the amount of Tween 80. LÄS MER
3. Carbon Nanotubes for Electronic Packaging: Growth, Novel Devices and 3D Networks
Sammanfattning : Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown great potential of application in electronics because of their attractive physical properties, such as high surface-to-volume ratio, high electron mobility, high Young’s modulus, high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion coefficient, etc. However, many obstacles are yet to be removed to use CNTs as building blocks in electronic systems. 4. Engineering and Functionalization of Degradable Scaffolds for Medical Implant Applications
Sammanfattning : The treatment of bone defects is facing the situation of lacking donations for autotransplantation. As a valid approach, scaffold-based tissue engineering combines the construction of well-defined porous scaffolds with advanced cell culturing technology to guide tissue regeneration. LÄS MER
5. Particle transport in human lung : effects of particle size and shape
Sammanfattning : Recent studies have shown that nanoparticles may be more toxic than larger particles of the same material, but the health risks associated with widespread use largely depend on the extent of exposure. When dealing with potentially toxic particles, precautionary measures have to be taken in order to minimize contact. LÄS MER
