16. Signalling pathways controlling bacterial adaptation
Sammanfattning : The conversion of environmental signals into cellular responses is a critically important process that occurs in all organisms. The ability to process information depends, in general, on complex signal transduction and regulatory networks that control genes required to cope with certain environmental conditions. LÄS MER
17. Mechanisms underlying lipotoxicity and glucotoxicity in pancreatic islets
Sammanfattning : Although it has been known for many years that long-term exposure of pancreatic islets to a high level of free fatty acids (FFA) or glucose negatively modulates islet hormone release, the identities of signals mediating these effects are not yet fully clarified. The overall objective of this study was to investigate signal transduction pathways involved in FFA- and glucose-exerted effects on beta-cell function during both short-term as well as long-term exposure. 18. Functional analysis of Ipf1/Pdx1, MFng and Id during pancreatic growth and differentiation
Sammanfattning : The pancreas is an endodermally derived organ consisting of three major cell lineages. The endocrine cells, organised into the Islets of Langerhans, regulate blood glucose homeostasis by producing and secreting hormones such as glucagon and insulin into the bloodstream. LÄS MER
19. Illumination in single cell optical microscopy studies - friend and foe
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on how to use light as a biological stress factor in optical microscopy experiments and simultaneously use the illumination to image the spatial and temporal protein dynamics in single yeast cells. The stress responses to environmental changes other than light have been extensively investigated in budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, often using techniques based on population averages. 20. Growth factor receptor signalling in thyrocytes of normal and neoplastic origin
Sammanfattning : Cellular growth and function are controlled by stimulatory and inhibitory factors actingthrough specific receptors. The present thesis focuses on the role of growth factors, theirreceptors and signalling pathways in normal and neoplastic thyroid epithelial cell biology. LÄS MER
